Division of Advising and Academic Resources

Goal I: Climate

USM continuously strives to make the campus a welcoming climate inclusive in its understanding and integration across multiple dimensions of diversity, including, but not limited to, diversity based on race and ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and age gender expression and identity, religion and class.

Assessment of achievements

  • The Divisions's commitment to this goal is reflected in its mission and goal statements and supported through the efforts of the individual departments within the Division. There remains a need to do more systematic assessment of goal progress.

  • The Division office assumes responsibility for monitoring, assessing, and ensuring that the programming and services of the departments within its purview share in this commitment. The structure of this responsibility is reflected in its goals for 2003-2006.


Goals for 2003-2006

Divisional

  • The Division will continue to promote departmental programs and services to ensure a campus climate that is welcoming and inclusive.

  • The Division will identify sources of funding to help support departmental diversity efforts.

  • The Division will develop an assessment strategy that will provide more complete evidence of individual departmental efforts in meeting this goal. Such a strategy will include the gathering of evidence regarding the impact of efforts to educate and inform faculty and staff as well as programming and services for students.

Academic Advising and Enrollment Services

  • Continue to maintain a welcoming atmosphere in Advising Services.

  • Continue to educate staff members in regards to underrepresented groups through workshops, conference participation and literature.

  • Work with the Academic Support for Students with Disabilities to create a support network through the Peer Advising program.

  • Work with the Muskie School to develop a program to promote and make available post-secondary educational opportunities for youth in foster care.

Learning Foundations

  • Maintain an atmosphere within the Learning Center that is welcoming and embraces diversity.

Assessment

  • Work with the Executive Director to develop an assessment strategy to gather evidence that the Division's departments are achieving this goal.

Support for Students with Disabilities

  • Maintain an office that is welcoming to all students.

  • Develop a service satisfaction survey to gather evidence of achievement regarding this goal.


GOAL II: Academic Experience

The USM curriculum and academic experience increasingly reflects the multiplicity and diversity of communities and cultures locally, nationally, and globally.

Assessment of achievements

  • The Division's commitment to this goal is reflected in the curricula of the courses and programs the departments under its purview offers. There remains a need to do more systematic assessment of goal progress.

  • The Division will continue to promote departmental programs and services to ensure that programs, courses, and services respond to this goal.

  • The Division will identify sources of funding to help support departmental programming and service efforts to promote diversity.

  • The Division will develop an assessment strategy that will provide more complete evidence of individual departmental efforts in meeting this goal.

Academic Advising and Enrollment Services

  • Continue to ensure the topic of diversity is focused upon within HRD 110 Choices, Changes and Careers and HRDX 220 College to Careers; courses for undeclared students.

  • Promote the necessity of a diversity focus in FRS 100 University Seminar; a course required of students admitted with conditions.

Learning Foundations

  • Continue to offer module within the Tutor Certification program that addresses multicultural issues.

  • Develop a module for inclusion within the training for part-time faculty that addresses multicultural issues.

  • Continue to offer presentations with the Center for Teaching on multicultural issues.

Assessment

  • Work with the Executive Director to develop an assessment strategy to gather evidence that the Division's departments are achieving this goal.

Support for Student with Disabilities

  • Continue to offer programs within the Center for Teaching on supporting students with disabilities.

  • Continue to provide consultation services to faculty and staff regarding the support of students with disabilities.


GOAL III: Student Recruitment and Retention

USM strives to increase the diversity of its student body through active outreach and recruitment. USM increasingly works to develop structures and mechanisms that support the retention of all students, particularly students of color and other underrepresented populations.

  • The Division's commitment to supporting the retention of all students, particularly students of color and other underrepresented populations is reflected in the student support programs and services offered within each of the department within its purview. There remains a need to do more systematic assessment of goal progress.

  • The Division will continue to promote departmental programs and services to support the retention of all students.

  • The Division will identify sources of funding to help support departmental programming and service efforts to promote student retention.

  • The Division will develop an assessment strategy that will provide more complete evidence of individual departmental efforts in meeting this goals. Such a strategy will include the gathering of evidence regarding the impact of retention programming and services.

Academic Advising and Enrollment Services

  • Continue to evaluate international transcripts.

  • Continue collaboration with Support for Students with Disabilities Office and exploring ways to identify an advising liaison to work with students with disabilities.

  • Continue the educational focus of diversity issues during orientation leader training and the peer leadership seminar.

  • Continue the academic advising plan for the English Language Bridge Program students in consultation with the director of ESL.

  • Continue the assignment of two academic advisors to work directly with the international and local immigrant and refugee population.

  • Continue to maintain a welcoming atmosphere in advising services.

  • Continue to work with Academic Support for Students with Disabilities to support students in their pursuit of academic success.

  • Continue to act as an avenue of referral to appropriate support services for diverse students.

  • Act as an advising liaison for Native American students.

  • Administer an educational planning survey to attain information to enable advisors to work effectively with students; identifying potential barriers to success, early intervention and connection with appropriate services.

  • Continue to implement the Academic Support Plan as a support system for students admitted with conditions.

  • Continue an advising program that promotes a proactive approach to academic advising that develops the advising relationship early in the student's academic career.

  • Identify diverse students to become peer advisors and orientation leaders.

  • Collaborate with the academic schools and colleges and the dean of students to revise and implement changes to the New Student Advising and Registration Program to insure all new students are involved in a program that promotes the understanding of diversity.

  • Incorporate diversity issues into the Family Member Program.

  • Continue the dissemination of the Veterans' Newsletter and Handbook, which updates, informs and connects students with the institution.

  • Continue Veterans' Day Open House which celebrates veteran students.

  • Develop extracurricular programs that promote the academic success of Veterans.

  • Promote work study opportunities for Veterans.

  • Develop a review process for advisors and the advising program.

Learning Foundations

  • Continue to assess the success of programs and services in improving the retention of all students and, in particular, those from underrepresented populations.

  • Continue to refine the tutorial support for non-native speaking students.

Assessment

Work with the Executive Director to develop an assessment strategy to gather evidence that the Division's departments are achieving this goal.

Support for Students with Disabilities

  • Explore the development of a program for students with learning disabilities.

  • Explore funding for a supported education program for students with disabilities.


GOAL IV: Faculty and Staff Recruitment and Retention

USM strives to increase the diversity of faculty and staff, particularly faculty and staff of color, but inclusive of other underrepresented populations as defined in Goal I.

Assessment of achievements

  • The Division's commitment to increasing the diversity of faculty and staff is reflected in its approaches to hiring. As positions become available, every effort is made to recruit qualified individuals from underrepresented populations.

  • Continue to promote diversity within each job description and search process to ensure the range of disabilities students face are represented within the staff.
