University of Southern Maine

Diversity Plan: 2003 - 2005

University Advancement

In order to support the goals indicated in the USM Diversity Plan the University Advancement division will implement its own plan in each of the operating areas.

To build the issue of diversity into the culture of the division, each director and development officer will add a goal relating to diversity as a part of his or her performance goals. Directors are evaluated on their performance against these goals on a quarterly basis.

In addition the following actions will be continued or undertaken:

Scholarship/Financial Support

  • University Advancement will undertake a review of the scholarship program at USM.

  • We will assess named and general scholarships with the aim of increasing access for all students. We will identify and array the scholarship opportunities available specifically for "under-represented" groups. We will work to enhance and provide meaningful scholarship opportunities and create or evolve more financially meaningful awards.

  • We will work to identify opportunities to raise funds for scholarships directed to specific populations as appropriate.

Fundraising

  • The development officers will work to support fundraising efforts to recognize diverse population through naming opportunities in building projects and to support other activities such as the Jean Byers Sampson Center in the Glickman Family Library.

  • Efforts will be made to reach out to groups such as the gay and lesbian community in support of the Community Education Center.

  • Development officers will continue to access resources of foundations that support activities that target youth, such as the King Foundation which supported the national Youth Sports Program held at USM last summer.

Volunteer Management/Leadership

  • The University of Southern Maine has several Boards which serve to advise the University. Efforts will be made to recruit members that represent diverse communities.

  • Each Board (Alumni Association, Corporate Partners, USM Foundation) will be engaged in a strategic planning process over the next few months. The issue of diversity will be addressed through each process.

Corporate Relations

  • The Corporate Relations area and the Corporate Partners program will work to attract a more diverse membership base. Minority owned businesses will be recruited for membership in the Corporate Partners program.

Alumni Relations

  • The Alumni relations area will work with USM Alumni to establish more affinity chapters such as the GLBTQ chapter established a few years ago. Alumni Relations will work with the new USM on- line program to establish chat rooms for interested parties.

Publications/Marketing

  • This area will continue with its work to depict a diverse and culturally rich USM community in all written and visual pieces.

  • They will work in conjunction with Media Relations to promote USM efforts in service learning and USM's involvement with diverse communities.

Finally, University Advancement staff will investigate a divisional volunteer opportunity at King Middle School to foster the University's involvement in the community and our understanding of those new to our city.
