(1) USM CAREER SERVICES AND PROFESSIONAL LIFE DEVELOPMENT OFFICE IS PARTNERING WITH THE WAGE PROJECT TO SPONSOR THE $TART $MART WORKSHOP
4:00-7:00pm, Tuesday April 22nd - 4th floor conference room of Glickman Library on Portland Campus
Topics covered will include: (1) The personal consequences of the gender wage gap: what a $1.2 million loss over one’s working lifetime means (2) Resources for benchmarking reasonable salaries and benefits: learn about job titles, their functions and salary ranges, the impact of market realities on salaries; compare skills and accomplishments to job requirements and market to target a realistic salary range. (3) Negotiation: how to aim high and be realistic; practice negotiation through role play exercises (4) Know your bottom line: develop a “bare bones” budget to pay rent, buy groceries, repay student loans, and other basic expenses. This event is free of charge but prior registration is required, students may register by calling 780-4220 and ask for Sally or by stopping by the office at 100 Payson Smith Hall. (2) USM JAZZ ENSEMBLE CONCERT SWING INTO SPRING
7:00pm, Tuesday April 22nd , at the Abromson Center’s Hannaford Hall on the Portland Campus, and is part of the Center for Continuing Education’s Evenings at Abromson series. “Swing into Spring will feature a variety of big band music from the past to the present. The concert selections include Duke Ellington’s upbeat “Rockin’ in Rhythm,” and walking ballad, “Sultry Sunset”, “In the Mood”, the former #1 hit made popular by the Glenn Miller Orchestra; and contemporary music such as “This I Dig of You” by Hank Mobley, “Exactly Like This” by Tom Kubis, and “Chet’s Call” by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays, among others. (3) USM FILM FORUM AND DISCUSSION “ BIG BUSINESS AND GHOST OF CONFICIUS”

Asia’s newly industrialized countries- Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore – are moving quickly to the forefront of the world economy. Their rapid economic development raises fundamental questions about how Asian-Pacific societies have entered the modern world, the role of the state in economic growth, and the way rulers and ruled alike have invoked traditional values in their efforts to “catch up”. (5)USM GEOGRAPHY-ANTHROPOLOGY STUDENT ASSOCIATION PRESENTS THEIR 3rd ANNUAL USM “ KNAP – IN
10:00am-4:00pm, Saturday, April 26th , Bailey Hall, Gorham Campus – Flint - knappers, or stone-tool-makers, gather at these events to practice their art and exchange ideas and materials. It is an opportunity for the students of this department to spread knowledge about the program and engage the community and simply have a great time! The Art Department will be helping participants to make their own prehistoric pottery. GIS (Geographic Information System) demonstrations and GPS scavenge hunt with the Geography faculty and staff. (8) USM THE 8th ANNUAL MULTICULTURAL STUDENT GRADUATION CELEBRATION DINNER AND DANCE
5:00-8:00 pm Wednesday April 30th, If you are a graduating student this year from an undergraduate or graduate degree program, you are invited to participate in this event. In addition we encourage you to submit a 3-5 minute speech for the Multicultural Graduation and the USM commencement on May 10th. Speech should be addressed to the University community in general including faculty members, staff and guests. Selection is based on Student’s experience as a member of the university community and on empowerment of racially/ethnically under-represented students, content, quality and oral presentation. Submissions are due by Friday, April 11th in the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, located in the Woodbury Campus Center, Portland. (9) 2008 MAINE STATE GOVERNMENT SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
A fulltime, 12 week, paid work experience in a State Agency, which begins May 27, and ends August 15, 2008. The Program combines work experience with an educational program designed to provide talented college students (who are either Maine residents or non-Maine residents who attend college in Maine) with an opportunity to participate in and contribute to Maine State Government.
