(1) DARA J. KAUFMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDY

New scholarship for USM study abroad! One $5000 award.

To be eligible: Be a full-time Maine resident; Have an overall GPA of 3.2 or more; Be enrolled as an undergraduate degree candidate; Be able to demonstrate financial need in order to receive up to $5000; Help publicize this opportunity to other students upon your return; Commit to participate in selecting a new Dara J. Kaufman Scholar during the semester following your trip.

Dara Kaufman was tragically killed during a camping trip on June 19, 2006, one day before her 23rd birthday. Just a year before this, Dara returned to the University of Southern Maine after a wonderful and transformative year spent studying in Seville, Spain. She graduated cum laude with a major in Hispanic Studies and a minor in Economics. To honor Dara’s love of learning, travel and adventure, a scholarship fund has been established* to support high-achieving USM students who wish to study abroad as part of an approved program and who would otherwise be unable financially to do so.

How to apply: You will be considered upon completion of a Dara Kaufman Memorial Scholarship application. The annual deadlines are October 1 for the following Spring study and February 29 for the following Fall or full year of study. “MACHITO: A LATIN JAZZ LEGACY” - In a career that spanned 50 years, Cuban bandleader Frank "Machito" Grillo embodied Latin Jazz, influencing several generations of musicians and contributing to a cultural explosion on the international music scene. In the years before the Civil War, slavery was the law of the land in the South and some slaves risked their lives trying to escape to the North in search of freedom. But there were men who made their living by bringing them back. Men like Augustus Cain – a scarred and troubled bounty hunter who could find those who didn’t want to be found. But when Cain set out for what he hoped would be his final journey, he found more than just another young runaway – he also found himself. Books will be available for purchase. (9) IRAQI WOMEN’S ORDEAL UNDER OCCUPATION

4:30pm-6:30pm, Thursday, October 11th, Gerald E. Talbot Lecture Hall

Born in Baghdad in 1960, Yanar Mohammad came of age in turbulent political times. She graduated from Baghdad University in 1984 and obtained a master's degree in architecture there in 1993. She is an accomplished artist and architect as well as an activist. The bulk of her activisim has centered around the issues of women's rights and honor killings. After leaving Iraq for Canada, in 1993, she and several other Iraqi women established the Defense of Iraqi Women's Rights (DIWR). She served as its director-coordinator in 1998, 1999, and 2002. In June of 2004, the group changed its name to the Organization of Women's Freedom in Iraq (OWFI) and relocated there. Ms. Mohammad became its president. Her work with the OWFI includes running women's shelters, an "underground railroad" for potential victims of honor killings, a Women's Prisons Watch and a Youth Movement-building team. She also works as editor-in chief for their newspaper, Equality (Al Mousawat). In May of this year, she was honored by the Feminist Majority Foundation and received the Eleanor Roosevelt Global Women's Rights Award.

(11) AUGUST WILSON’S THE PIANO LESSON

Evening – Play & Talkback with Actors

August Wilson is one of America’s most gifted playwrights. The NAACP will partner with PSC to offer discounted tickers to its members and provide an opportunity to talk directly to the actors about the meaning of the play and its impact of legacy, race, and identity today. This event traditionally takes place during the Excellence in Education Celebration held annually in April. It is organized in partnership with the Diversity Hiring Coalition (DHC) of Maine and Employment Times.

Helping Women 40+ Discover New Lives and New Futures

The AARP Foundation’s Women’s Scholarship Program provides scholarship funds to women 40+ seeking new job skills, training, and educational opportunities to support themselves and their families. The AARP Foundation Women’s Scholarship Program is available to eligible individuals with moderate to lower incomes and limited financial resources. The scholarship program is made possible by a generous donation from AARP to the AARP Foundation, the organization’s affiliated charity.
