Online Course Self-Assessment and Peer-Mentoring Guide
(a self-assessment rubric for your online course development)
examines the current and future role of technology in higher education. CDW-G surveyed more than 1,000 college students, faculty and Information Technology (IT) staff members to understand their respective perceptions of campus technology.
The paper provides an overview of the process of designing and developing a Web-based course using instructional design principles and models.
See particularly the discussion of online learning findings on pages 16 and 17.
U.S. Dept. of Education Report on Online Learning
The U.S. Department of Education recently released it's Evaluation of Evidence-Based Practices in Online Learning. Key findings follow:
- Students who took all or part of their class online performed better, on average, than those taking the same course through traditional face-to-face instruction.
- Instruction combining online and face-to-face elements had a larger advantage relative to purely face-to-face instruction than did purely online instruction.
- Few rigorous research studies of the effectiveness of online learning for K–12 students have been published.

Chuck Dziuban of the University of Central Florida offered an entertaining, thought-provoking session at UMA in May. He does a good job of portraying the techno-savviness of young folks, and describes some of the research that he and his students are conducting about learning through technology. I think that many of you would find it worth your time to watch the videostream of his presentation. It's about an hour and a half long. Note that the presentation starts about 19 minutes into the recording.
