Members of USM's Athletic Training Education Program Use AED to Save Referee's Life
Anita Dixon, an alumni of USM's Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) and Athletic Trainer for Westbrook High School, was called into action at a preseason basketball game when a referee suffered a heart attack while working the game.
Accompanied by two current USM ATEP students working as interns at the game, Dixon and her team used an automated external defibrillator, or AED, to shock the referee in order to get his heart back in rhythm.
Dixon was featured in a video about her experience on WCSH 6 News and the story was highlighted in the National Athletic Trainers' Association Range of Motion Newsletter.
