OCCUPATIONAL POSSIBILITIES


MATHEMATICIAN

Solves economic, scientific, engineering, and business problems using mathematical knowledge and computational tools. Uses computers extensively to analyze relationships among variables, solve complex problems, develop models, and process large amounts of data. Conducts research in basic math. Studies and tests theories used to explain facts or evens. Looks for new uses of algebra, geometry and other branches of math. Creates new mathematical theories and techniques involving the latest technology. Prepares graphs, charts, and reports. Some teach at college or university or do consulting work.

Educational Requirements

A bachelor's degree or higher, plus work experience. A bachelor's degree in mathematics is the minimum education needed for prospective mathematicians. A master's degree in mathematics is sufficient preparation for some research positions and for teaching jobs in most junior or community colleges and in some small 4 year colleges. However, in most 4 year colleges and universities, a Ph.D.. degree is necessary for full faculty status. In private industry, job candidates generally need a master's or Ph. D. degree to obtain jobs as mathematicians.

ACTUARY

Answers questions about future risk, makes pricing decisions, and formulates investment strategies. Assembles and analyzes statistics to calculate probabilities of death, sickness, injury, disability, retirement income level, property loss, or return on investment. Uses this information to determine the expected insured loss, or to make other business decisions. May specialize in either life, health, or property and casualty insurance; in pension plans; or in financial planning and investment. May calculate premium rates and determine policy contract provisions for each type of insurance offered. May help companies set up pension and welfare plans by calculating future benefits and determining the amount of employer contributions. May help companies develop plans to enter new lines of business. Uses knowledge of math, statistics, and business. May use computers to analyze statistics and calculate probabilities.

Educational Requirements

Educational requirements include a Bachelor's degree. A good educational background for beginning job in a large life or casualty company is a bachelor's degree in mathematics or statistics, or a business related discipline, such as actuarial science, economics, finance, or accounting. Some companies hire applicants with any major, provided the applicant has a working knowledge of mathematics, including individuals who, in addition to a strong technical background, have some training in liberal arts and business.

Accounting Clerk
Balance daily bank deposits; reconcile bank accounts; create journal entries; cash receipts ;disbursement worksheets; enter journal entries in general ledger package; analyze individual accounts in the general ledger.
Qualifications: Accounting or Business Administration Degree; Windows, Excel, Word, IBM PC; Accounting/ bookkeeping experience helpful but not required.

Account Manager -
Service/delivery work in customers facilities, quoting and processing orders, general customer service work. Company is one of North America's largest industrial distributors of fasteners and related items, and a leader in material sourcing and management systems.
Qualifications: 4-year degree preferred, good analytical abilities, strong communication and organizational skills.

Budget Analyst
Review agency operations and capital budget request and prepare written budget analyses; assist in preparation of appropriation bills; prepare issue papers; assist assigned agencies in the preparation of their annual budget requests.
Qualifications: Masters degree OR Bachelors degree plus eighteen months employment as a budget analyst in a central budget office of a state, large municipality or federal government office.

Instructional Aide
Assisting faculty with math and computer science courses, tutoring math students individually and in groups, handling departmental clerical duties and supervising student aides.
Qualifications: BA/BS in mathematics.

Satellite/Tracking Station Engineers
Involved in satellite operations, ground station operations, analysis of all aspects of satellite and ground station operations.
Qualifications: BS in Engineering, Math, Physics or Computer Science.

Applied Social Science Research Assistant
Utilization of software packages to manage survey, US. Census and other databases, design and creation of computer assisted telephone interviewing programs, telephone and postal survey instruments, data-entry and cleaning programs, statistical tables and summaries.
Qualifications: Data-analytical capabilities, experience with Microsoft Office applications, excellent technical and business writing skills. Top
