  Speech Requirements:

Graduation cap Speaker must be a graduating student, eligible to participate in commencement and have no more than 9 credit hours to complete at the end of the Spring semester.
Graduation cap Speech must be 3-5 minutes in length (approximately 500-750 words).
Graduation cap One speech per graduating student may be submitted.
Graduation cap Two students may collaborate on a speech together, but only one student will be permitted to deliver the speech and sit on the commencement stage.  
Graduation cap Speech should be addressed to the University community in general, including traditional and non-traditional students, family members, guests, faculty and staff.  
Graduation cap It is suggested that the speech  reflect the student's experience as a member of the University community.
Graduation Cap Selection is based on quality, originality of content and oral presentation.

Presentation Requirement:  

One or more selections from all entries will be orally presented before the selection committee on Wednesday, April 9th  from 3:00-4:30 p.m. in room 217 Abromson Center, Portland Campus. * If you submit a speech, please block out this time on your schedule.  You will be notified by April 1st if you will be invited to present before the committee.

Process:   

Cover sheets and information will be available Friday, February  8, 2008, at

* Advising Services, 119 Payson Smith Hall, Portland;
* Dean’s Office, Lewiston/Auburn College.

Grad cap The student speaker is chosen by a committee made up of students, faculty and staff.  
grad cap Commencement is at 9:00 a.m. on May 10, 2008, at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

grad cap The selected speaker will be honored with a University of Southern Maine Chair with engraved name plate.  
Graduation cap For any writing assistance, you are encouraged to contact the Portland Learning Center, 253 Luther Bonney Hall; or Gorham Learning Center, Costello Sports Complex.
