FAQ - Dominican Republic TripOUR HISTORY : In the summer of 1995, the USM College of Nursing went on its first trip to the North coast of the Dominican Republic. There were eight nursing students from various levels of preparedness and several interpreters. Arrangements to work with a missionary doctor, and to stay in a Catholic retreat center were made by Anne Keith on a prior mission to the Dominican Republic through Intercultural Nursing, Inc. How do I apply? You must submit an application to International Programming, and notify Anne Keith of your interest. Any Spanish ability is an asset to be noted. Include what you hope to gain from this trip, and which course(s) you will be taking for credit hours. When is the program offered? The course/program is offered in early January and mid-summer. Courses fill up 6-12 months ahead. Are there prerequisites? Undergraduate nursing students must have completed junior year clinical courses, and Concepts of Community Health. RN to BS/MS students must have Concepts in Community Health, Professional Communication and Technology Utilization, Health Assessment and Lab and all clinical prerequisites for NUR 417. Spanish students must clear any Spanish credits with the Foreign Language Department. Graduate nursing students must clear their special project plan with Anne Keith. Does everyone take it for credit? Non-credit volunteer participants will be charged an administrative fee in place of tuition. What do other participants say about the program? Many find the experience enriching, some find it to be life-altering. There will be many new sounds, sights, and ways of being to encounter in a culture vastly different from your own. Your own experience will be unique and will largely depend upon what you bring to it. |
