Faculty Handbook
Professor Emeritus/Emerita: Criteria and Process
Guidelines
The following guidelines have been prepared to assist those who wish to nominate retiring faculty members for the honor of professor emerita/emeritus, in recognition of outstanding contributions to the College of Nursing and Health Professions and University. The College of Nursing and Health Professions faculty acknowledges that excellent faculty members will have very different profiles, and may demonstrate excellence in one or more areas. This document is also intended to assist the Peer Review Committee in considering nominations of professors in nursing, Recreation and Leisure, and Sports Medicine.
Criteria approved by the Board of Trustees (BOT) and used throughout the University of Maine System are listed and underlined. College of Nursing and Health Professions interpretations are listed below each criterion.
- Length of service to the university- (minimum 15 years; typically 25 or more)
Nursing has a different history than most of the University, having not required doctoral preparation until approximately 1987. To achieve excellence (and accreditation) it was necessary to recruit faculty who were already well established in their careers (credentials and experience). Some faculty are given advanced credit toward promotion to bring them here, which suggests we are crediting previous experience.
- Contributions to his or her field
Contributions may be in areas of theory and practice, publications, presentations and/or research; reflect positively on the College of Nursing and Health Professions and USM; significant, "above and beyond" the norm for College of Nursing and Health Professions faculty.
- Dedication to the institution and to education
Including students and/or other faculty in clinical practice; research or scholarly work; including students and/or other faculty in the dissemination of findings might evidence involvement and collaboration.
- Significant participation in campus life
Examples might include creating new programs/entities (e.g., NE Studies, Diversity Day); participation with faculty or student organizations (e.g., Faculty Senate, student professional organization); advising, participating, leading, etc.
- Outstanding service to the community
Examples: serving on boards, working with community programs and/or civic organizations; contributing to public relations and media coverage; involvement with one's professional organizations.
- Esteem of students and colleagues
May include student evaluations and comments; letters and testimonials from students and colleagues.
Process
A faculty member who wishes to nominate a retiring faculty member for professor emerita/emeritus should send a letter of nomination to the peer review committee. Nominations may be made at any time, but those that are made later than the fall semester may not be processed in time for the announcement to be made at graduation. The letter of nomination should address the criteria.
The nominee should submit a Curriculum Vita, and is invited to submit any other materials that would personalize and support the nomination.
The Peer Review Committee will review nomination materials. They will forward the names of the nominees along with the recommendations of the committee to the fall faculty for a written ballot. Materials will then go to the Dean, who is responsible for making recommendations to the provost.
Approved December 3, 1998
