Faculty Handbook
Electives Policies
Faculty are encouraged to review the University's academic policies in the USM Faculty Handbook
- Courses, which are required for any program within the College, are not considered electives. However, students for whom they are not required courses may take them for elective credit.
- Covering the required curriculum is the first priority for scheduling faculty workload.
- Decisions to offer electives are based on the following guidelines:
- Course must be approved by the Curriculum Committee of the relevant program(s).
- Consideration will be given to the course's:
- prior course evaluation and registration, and
- status regarding: programmatic demand (e.g., required electives in Recreation and Leisure Studies).
- When a conflict arises, courses will be alternated.
- If a required existing elective and a new approved offering cannot be offered in the same semester, the courses will be offered in alternating semesters.
- Due to resources (i.e., budgetary constraints), the Dean's office will make final decisions on elective course offerings.
- Catalog will reflect current offerings.
- Marketing of elective courses is the responsibility of faculty offering the course.
- College administrative policy mandates that 14 students must be enrolled in an elective on the first day of class in order for the course to be offered.
