Adjunct Faculty/Faculty Associates Policies
- Adjunct Faculty
Adjunct faculty are persons who by their professional cooperation significantly assist the University of Southern Maine in its academic programs. Adjunct faculty members may include employees of the University of Southern Maine as well as individuals from outside the University.
- Adjunct faculty may be appointed at the following ranks:
- Adjunct Instructor
- Adjunct Assistant Professor
- Adjunct Associate Professor
- Adjunct Professor
- The criteria for appointment as an adjunct faculty member shall normally be consistent with the University of Southern Maine criteria for the ranks of Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor. In some instances, achievements in a field may be such they compensate for the fact an individual does not meet the criteria for a particular rank. This should be substantiated.
- Recommendations for appointment as adjunct faculty originate in the academic departments, are forwarded to the Dean/ Director for review and recommendation, and to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for review and a decision. The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs appoints adjunct faculty.
- All appointments are subject to review annually.
- An Adjunct appointment does not grant any salary or benefits to individuals and adjunct faculty are not eligible for tenure.
- An adjunct appointment does not extend any expectation for prior service credit, rank, salary, or tenure should an individual subsequently be recommended for employment in a faculty position a the University of Southern Maine.
- An individual with an adjunct appointment may contract to teach for the University of Southern Maine under the applicable part time or overload policies.
- Faculty Associate
Faculty Associates are individuals in organizations external to the University of Southern Maine with which the University has a cooperative program relationship. The title is used with the appropriate discipline designation, for example, “Faculty Associate in Social Welfare.”
- The criteria for appointment as a Faculty Associate shall be established by the College or School.
- Recommendations for appointment as a Faculty Associate originate in the academic departments and are forwarded to the Dean or director for review and a decision. The Dean or Director appoints Faculty Associates.
- All appointments are subject to review annually.
- A Faculty Associate appointment does not grant any salary or benefits to individuals and Faculty Associates are not eligible for tenure.
- A Faculty Associate appointment does not extend any expectation for prior service credit, rank, salary or tenure should an individual subsequently be recommended for employment in a faculty position at the University of Southern Maine.
- An individual with a Faculty Associate appointment may contract to teach for the University of Southern Maine under the applicable part time or overload policies, or may receive pay for responsibilities resulting from the cooperative program relationship.
- Visiting Faculty
Visiting faculty members are individuals who hold regular faculty appointments at other institutions of higher education and Have all of the traditional faculty responsibilities at that institution.- Visiting faculty may be appointed at the following ranks:
- Visiting Instructor
- Visiting Assistant Professor
- Visiting Associate Professor
- Visiting Professor
- The criteria for appointment as a visiting faculty member shall be consistent with the University of Southern Maine criteria for the ranks of Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor.
- Recommendations for appointment as visiting faculty originate in the academic departments, are forwarded to the Dean/ Director for review and recommendation, and to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for review and a decision. The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs appoints visiting faculty.
- A visiting faculty member may be reappointed.
- A visiting faculty member is eligible for salary and benefits in accordance with the University of Maine System Policies . A visiting faculty member is not eligible for tenure.
- An appointment as a visiting faculty member does not extend any expectation for prior service credit, rank, salary or tenure should an individual subsequently be recommended for a faculty position at the University of Southern Maine .
