Daylight Saving Time 2007
February 2007
Beginning on March 11, 2007, the start and end dates for Daylight Saving Time (DST) in the US will change: DST will begin on the second Sunday of March and end on the first Sunday in November. In 2007, DST will begin on March 11 and end on November 4.
How does the 2007 change in DST start and end times affect me?
The DST change affects all of the following items:
Personal Computers
Most current operating systems (Windows XP with Service Pack 2, Mac OS X) have updates available that will adjust the dates on which DST starts and ends. For some older operating systems, you will need to run a utility to reset the DST start and end dates or there is no update currently available.
| Operating System | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Windows XP (Service Pack 2) | Automatic updates should be turned on and your machine should have been updated on or around February 13, 2007. To check, go to Start > All Programs > USM Apps > Verify My DST Settings. This will show you the status of the DST update. |
| Mac OSX 10.3.9 and above | Apple update is available. Go to the Apple menu and choose Apple Software Update. |
| Windows 2000 | No update is available. Know that your calendar items will show an hour late from March 11 through March 31 2007, and from October 28 through November 3, 2007. |
| Windows 98 | No update is available. Know that your calendar items will show an hour late from March 11 through March 31, 2007, and f rom October 28 through November 3, 2007. |
| Mac OSX 10.2x | There is an untested 3rd party update available. |
| Mac OS 9 | No update available. Manually adjust in the Date and Time Control Panel and uncheck Automatic Time Synchronize. |
GroupWise Calendar Issues
Verify your calendar appointments that are scheduled to occur between March 11 and March 31, 2007, inclusive!
If any of these appointments were entered into the calendar before February 10, 2007, it is likely that they are now showing as an hour later during those three weeks. Every appointment that is showing incorrectly in your GroupWise calendar needs to be manually adjusted to the correct time.
| Appointment Type | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| For Posted appointments (appointments that don't include other GroupWise users) | Drag and drop the appointment to the correct time. Move the appointment back one hour. Repeat for every posted appointment that needs correction from March 11 through March 31, 2007. |
| For Single Group Appointments that you created (appointments that do include other GroupWise users) | Right-click the appointment and choose Resend. In the Appointment window, change the time of the meeting back one hour, and click Send. It will ask if you want to Retract the Original, click Yes. All participants will be sent a new appointment with the corrected time. Repeat for every Group appointment that needs correction from March 11 through March 31, 2007. |
| Recurring Group Appointments | Do the steps of Single Group Appointments, above, but when Resend is selected, you will be prompted to choose This Instance or All Instances. Choose This Instance and continue as above. |
For Single Group Appointments and Recurring Group Appointments: If the Resend choice is not available, this means you did not originally create the appointment. Only the originator of Group appointments can Resend them. Contact the originator and request that they follow these steps to change the appointment time.
As always, please contact the Help!Desk at 780-4029 or helpdesk@usm.maine.edu if computing help is needed.
Mobile Devices (Palm, Dell Axims, Blackberry)
Both the device and the server that synchronizes the device with your GroupWise client must be updated or manually adjusted. You will need to update your mobile device and IT Network Services will update the servers as the updates become available.
| Device | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Palm Device | User must adjust the definition of the DST setting by tapping on Date & Time > Location > Edit List > Edit. Tap on the check box beside "This location observes Daylight Saving Time". Tap on Start and choose second Sunday of March. Tap OK. Tap on End and select first Sunday of November. |
| Dell Axim(Windows CE Device) | A patch from Microsoft is required which is applied in a variety of ways according to the version of Windows Mobile that your device has. Contact the Help!Desk for assistance in patching these devices. |
| Palm and Windows Device Server (GroupWise Mobile Server) | As of February 23, 2007, no update is available. Until this update becomes available, your appointment times on Palm and/or Dell devices will show as an hour earlier than those on your GroupWise calendar from March 11 through March 31, 2007. |
| Blackberry | Both the devices and the server have been updated. No further actions are required. |
