USM Modem Internet Access Policy
Instituted 28 Dec 1998
Document Updated 9 Nov 2007
Each currently registered student, faculty member, and staff member may access any University of Maine System modem pool in the state at no charge for 100 hours of usage per month. This access allows the user to access the Internet through the University and potentially access internal University resources.
Once a user has reached the 100 hour limit in a month, further connections to the modem pool will not be allowed. At the first of the next month, the user gets a new 100 hour limit and can begin using the modem pool again. Unused hours cannot be rolled forward to subsequent months.
Modem pool numbers and information can be found on the University of Maine System web site (www.unet.maine.edu/noc/modem.html). The listed numbers are not toll-free and long distance charges are the responsibility of the user.
Effective December 1, 2007: There is no option to acquire additional time on University modem pools. People who need more than 100 hours/month should investigate local service providers. A list of internet service providers is available from the State of Maine. In addition, the Office of the Public Advocate for Maine offers up to date information on rates and options.
