USM hosts New Mainers' Day
On Saturday, May 5th, USM and Refugee & Immigration Services of Catholic Charities Maine will host nearly 100family members and individuals for the annual New Mainers' Day. The event will be held in the Sullivan Gym on the Portland campus, and is the only opportunity each year for all "New Mainers" who have joined greater Portland's immigrant and refugee communities in the past year to be together, to network, share stories, and create community. With support from a grant from the University of Maine System Diversity Committee, transportation is being provided and a pot-luck lunch supported. Volunteers will lead games and activities for the children, including parachute games, face painting, crafts, and of course, soccer, so that parents can socialize with one another.
January is National Mentoring Month!
Recruitment for Spring 2013 mentors and tutors is under way! Mentoring has demonstrated results in increased academic performance and aspirations for middle and high school students. Tutoring and homework support in after school programs supports the college aspirations of elementary, middle, and high school students in school and community based programs five days a week. The full list of programs is here; contact us now to start the application and placement process for a prompt start in the new year!
