New Students Begin Their USM Experience with Service
A dozen new students and USM staff participated together in a service project on Labor Day as part of their orientation to student life at USM. In collaboration with the Gorham Parks & Recreation Department, the students took up shovels and rakes and edgers and spades, and weeded and cultivated and mulched overgrown flower beds around Robie Gym and Phinney Park in Gorham Village. Reflection on the experience invited them to consider their new relationship with Gorham and Portland communities, and include regular participation in service as part of their USM experience.
January is National Mentoring Month!
Recruitment for Spring 2013 mentors and tutors is under way! Mentoring has demonstrated results in increased academic performance and aspirations for middle and high school students. Tutoring and homework support in after school programs supports the college aspirations of elementary, middle, and high school students in school and community based programs five days a week. The full list of programs is here; contact us now to start the application and placement process for a prompt start in the new year!
