College Experience Day is November 30
In collaboration with Portland Schools' Multilingual &Multicultural Office, USM welcomes 9th graders from Deering High School to our annual College Experience Day on November 30th. All students whose families have come to Maine from other countries and cultures, the Deering students will be escorted to classroom visits by USM students, take a campus tour, and have lunch in the Woodbury Campus Center. They'll hear from Rachel Morales of our Undergraduate Admission staff, and from a panel of USM students who will share their own immigration and academic journeys.
College Experience Day began as a service learning project of Political Science 380, "The Refugee Experience," and has become an annual project of the Office of Community Service Learning. Deering teacher Jennifer Lunt says that last year's trip to the USM campus was "a game changer" for her students.
USM student volunteers provide hospitality and serve as role models for the younger students.
For more information or to volunteer, contact Stacy Normand, Programs Coordinator, Office of Community Service Learning, 780-4537 or snormand@usm.maine.edu.
Help us plan USM Day of Service!
We are gearing up for the planning of the 2013 USM Day of Service, which will take place on Friday, April 19th from 10am-4pm. All students are welcome to join the planning committee and offer insight on how we might give back to the community on this special day. Please accompany us in this process! Contact Julia Pond at jpond@usm.maine.edu if you are interested.
