Community Service Learning is at the cutting edge of USM's commitment to engaged learning that transforms lives and communities!

As an approach to teaching and learning that "integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic repsonsibility, and strengthen communities," (National Service Learning Clearninghouse), service learning benefits students, the community, and the institution by boosting the quality of learning and addressing community needs.

STRIVE ROCKS!

Our good community partners at STRIVE (whose services in support of youth and young adults with developmental disabilities include STRIVE U, a partnership with USM) are expanding their annual fundraiser to include BOTH the popular STRIVERocks all night Dance Marathon  March 2nd (9pm-9am) AND a “Dance Day” event for younger children and families on Sunday, March 3rd from 10-6pm.   There are many volunteer opportunities to support these events:    Shifts are available from 9pm-9am on Saturday March 2nd into March 3rd, and from 10am-6pm on Sunday March 3rd.   If you can help, contact Kristina Smalley at  774-6278 or ksmalley@pslservices.org.  For more about the entire event, and about STRIVE, see www.striverocks.org .

Connect to Community Needs

We maintain a list of ad hoc opportunities for students to serve in the community in a wide range of ways.  Most are one-time projects, but some are calls for committed service in a particular program.  Click here for the list, or contact us to discuss the kind of opportunity you're looking for.
