TEDx Dirigo Engage!
The Institute for Civic Leadership is partnering with USM Community Service Learning to host the TEDx Dirigo Engage! conference at USM's Abromson Center for Community Education on Saturday, May 19th, 9 AM - 6 PM.
Experience a full day of speakers and performers for a special spring
event. Engage! will feature a dynamic range of innovators from across Maine, sharing how their engagement in ideas is making an impact in their communities and across the globe.
Registration starts at 9, speakers begin at 10; closing Reception from 5-6 pm.
This independent TEDx event is operated under license from TED.
Maine Campus Compact Awards Recognize and Celebrate Civic Engagement
Maine Campus Compact is a coalition of 17 member campuses, including the University of Southern Maine, whose purpose is to catalyze and lead a movement to reinvigorate the public purposes and civic mission of higher education. The Compact's annual awards program confers four distinguished awards recognizing statewide excellence in civic engagement, the CIVio Award, the Harward Award for Service Learning Excellence, the Student Heart and Soul Award, and the President's Campus Leadership Award. A recognition event honoring the award recipients will take place on Friday, April 20th at Bates College. Past USM award recipients include Benjamin Towne, Cole Leighton, Lorrayne Carroll, Jennifer Murray, and Lynn Kuzma.
USM Day of Service
USM Day of Service is an opportunity for USM community members to join together to better the Greater Portland community. At the 3rd Annual USM Day of Service on April 20th from 11am-4pm, USM students will be serving at the following sites:
- Rippling Waters Organic Farm(Standish): Good Weather = covering outdoor gardens with soil, leaves & hay & making raised beds; poor weather = planting in greenhouse & hoop houses
- Partners for World Health(Scarborough): Sorting medical supplies to be sent to developing nations
- Portland Trails(Portland): TBD, most likely derooting and clearing trails
- Gorham Greenhouse(Gorham Campus): making raised beds, planting seeds, marking plants
Transportation is provided to all service sites that are not located on campus, and lunch is provided to all participants. Students who wish to serve at either Rippling Waters Organic Farm or the Gorham Greenhouse should register for the Gorham campus, while those who wish to serve at Portland Trails or Partners for World Health should register for the Portland campus. Registering for individual service sites will take place on the morning of the event, on a first come first serve basis.
