Craig Hutchinson has worked in college and university student affairs for 30 years at the University of Maine, Merrimack College (Mass.) and, since 1988, at USM. Craig served in a variety of administrative roles at USM in Residence Life, Student Activities, Greek Life, Student Governance and Leadership, Community Standards, and was executive assistant to the vice president for Student Development prior to his appointment as vice president for student and university Life in September 2001.
As vice president, Craig oversees administrative units responsible for ensuring that quality student services and co-curricular programs are in place supporting the learning environment for USM’s 10,000 students. These units include: the Dean of Student Life, Athletics and Recreation, University Police (Parking and Transportation), University Health and Counseling, Residential Life and Resident Education, Dining Services, Student Involvement and Activities, Early Student Success, Community Service and Civic Engagement, Mult-cultural Student Affairs, Center for Sexualities and Gender Diversity, Women’s Resources, the Sullivan Recreation and Fitness Complex, USM Child and Family Centers, Community Standard,s and USM’s Emergency Response Program.
At USM, Craig has been intimately involved in a number of broad initiatives and organizations over the past 20 years including: the Weekend College Task Force, the International Student Affairs Advisory Board, the USM Child and Family Center Advisory Board, the USM Mediation Program, the University Scholarship and Awards Committee, the USM Gay Men’s Discussion Group (convener), Commencement Committee, the Student Commencement Speaker Selection Committee (chair), reviews of the USM Residence Life program and Greek Life program, Student Communications Board, and liaison to the USM Student Senate.
Craig’s active involvement in professional organizations includes the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), serving as Region 1 Vice President from 2004-2006, the Maine Association of Student Affairs Practitioners (chair), American College Personnel Association (ACPA), Association of College Unions International (ACUI), Association of College and University Housing Officers – International (ACUHO-I), National Association of Campus Activities (NACA). He is also a Notary Public in the state of Maine.
Craig received degrees in business administration and public administration from the University of Maine in 1978 and 1980
