Silence Exercise
Instructions: Find a comfortable place where you can meditate
for 15 minutes. Set a timer to indicate when 15 minutes are up and
begin to sit or lie quietly. The key is to attempt to not think
for the 15 minutes--no words going through your mind, no meaningful
thoughts, images, etc. Let's try to see what life would be like without
words and meaningful thoughts for 15 minutes. Any questions? Let me
know. If not, do this exercise and immediately afterwards write to our
discussion board a brief statement describing the experience. What went
on for you? Can you recall some of the thoughts? How did it feel? What
was the experience of time like? Did it go slowly, quickly? no
difference from usual? What else can you report? Was it relaxing or not?
What function(s) do words and meaningful ideas seem to serve for us. Is
this intrapersonal communication and do naming and thinking and
internal dialogue constitute a part of communication behavior or not?
