Subject: Hello!

Hi Lenny-

Just thought I would drop a line and let all you wonderful professors know that your teaching paid off! I am now employed by Idexx Laboratories. I have been there for almost a month now and I love it. I am acting as a "communication" line between Idexx and Dr's and Techs in Clinics all over the world. We just had a public relations seminar and it reminded how much I learned in the Com dept at USM. Again...just thought you might want to know where one of your recent Alumni is!

On my way to a career in higher education as an academic counselor, I decided, "hey, I don't want to advise students on what courses to take, I want to teach the courses." After completing a masters in higher education from Drake University and then staying home raising three children, I am now back at work part time (if you consider teaching 12 credits part time) as an adjunct instructor at the local community college. I am currently working on a second masters, this time in communication studies from Fort Hays State University in Kansas. I teach ethics, Intro to mass com, speech, and mass com law (team taught with the Webster County Attorney and USM grad, my husband Tim). I thank USM for helping me find my academic passion. James A. Hussiere Communication, 1991 New Gloucester, Maine System Integration Specialist, Banknorth NA. http://www.drjamez.com Hello! A little bit about myself: after graduating from USM in 1991, I went to the New York Institute of Technology to earn my Masters degree in Communication Arts (granted with distinction) in December, 1992. From there, I found my way back to Maine in a variety of media positions. I was a writer/director/editor/producer/videographer for a cable advertising company, I was the first titled "Chief News Photographer" for the former Fox-51 in Portland, Maine. I served as an Associate Producer/Director for Maine Public Television, and finally found my way into the first titled "Web Producer" position at WGME in Portland, Maine. This convergence of media and technology led me into my current career path as a professional geek, first with the Brunswick School Department, and now with Banknorth. Still, media calls to me. I am a PhD student at the European Graduate School (http://www.egs.edu) in the Communications program. The program requires three weeks a year in Switzerland with the rest of the study performed online. Yes, it is an accredited degree, complete with an U.S. Department of Education code. Additionally, I teach Digital Media for Gray/New Gloucester adult education on the side. Kathryn, Rebecca, Russell and Lenny... what can I say? Thank you all for putting me on the path on which I now tread. Among my many memories I remember Kathryn's guidance and positive criticism when making a student video, Rebecca's good humor and patient nature when I and the very few other men in Women in Film argued for "Alien" as a feminist film, Russell's willingness to accept a term paper delivered directly to his home the night it was due, and Lenny's excellent Intrapersonal Communication class which still sticks with me to this day. Thank you. Sincerely, James A. Hussiere line_mou.gif - 1390 Bytes

Hello!
I am a 1999 graduate of the USM Department of Communication, who has since moved to Lawrence, Kansas to pursue my Master¹s degree in Communication Studies at the University of Kansas. I am currently working at an incredible advertising agency in an entry level position. I am planning to move up within the agency to someday become an Account Executive. We have a great website that will tell you a little bit about who we are and what we do!: Callahancreek

I would also like to add that I am very proud of my education at USM. The professors are wonderful and extremely knowledgeable (Lenny in particular!) and I feel that my education has prepared me very well for the ²real² world. Lenny, Dan, & Russ have inspired me to pursue my education even further by going to graduate school. Thanks for everything!

Well Hello Lenny! And hello to com majors at USM. My name is Lisa (Duclos) Flynn and I am a 1995 graduate of the Communication Dept. at USM. After a few years as an Advertising Exec. at agencies in both Atlanta and Chicago, I took on the role of Marketing Director at LinksCorp, a company that owns and operates 27 golf courses in the Southeastern U.S. The company is based in Chicago, but my husband and I (that's right Lenny, I've been married for two very happy years now!) just relocated back 'home' - to the Portsmouth, NH area. Needless to say, I am now telecommuting from Portsmouth to Chicago...Oh the benefits of living in an e-world!

Enough about myself - I am actually writing to offer my assistance to any undergrad com majors who may need advice, help or very possibly an internship this summer. I won't be able to pay too terribly much, but if you're looking to go into marketing, this will be your chance to learn, learn, learn!

Please reply directly to my email address: lisaflynn@linkscorp.com

Lenny, I am glad to know you are still there. Students, he is the best professor you will ever have! Enjoy him while you can :)

Jonathan Nichols-Pethick Communication/Media Arts, 1994 Bloomington, IN Graduate student in Communication and Culture at Indiana University -- currently working on my dissertation which is turning out to be a cultural history of the police genre from "Hill Street Blues" to "Homicide". I've also been teaching several courses here at IU, including: beginning and advanced television production (both field and studio), television criticism, and public speaking. jonichol@indiana.edu

Wendy (Nadeau) Wagnis Communication, 2001 Falmouth, ME Technical Writer W_nadeau@hotmail.com Hi Lenny! I love that there is a web page for this! [:)] Thanks also to Rich West, for pushing me to go beyond what I thought my limit was. I am recently married and looking forward to starting a family! Take care all USM undergrads and graduates! Hi Lenny! and hello to COM majors at USM! This is Andrea Marchessault, class of 2002, North Waterboro, Maine. I feel inclined to write something here because I absolutely LOVED my experience as a COM major at USM. Growing up so close to USM, I had never considered going there. After leaving Maine for a year for school, I missed it too much and transfered to USM. I truly found my home in the Communication dept. The education is wonderful, the professors top notch, and the friendships I have made and the conversations we have had, (Oh the conversations!) were all that I had hoped for out of college. Nowadays, I'm working as an Account Executive at WCSH 6 (NBC affiliate) in Portland, Maine. After an internship (which everyone should do) here in the Community Relations dept. I was hired in sales as an AE. I love working here, and we offer internships! If anyone wants advice, or who to contact for an internship, my contact info is: Andrea Marchessault WCSH 6 207-828-6666 x.322 andrea.marchessault@wcsh6.com

P.S. Thanks to all of my professors, I enjoyed all of you, but special thanks to Lenny and Rebecca. You are the ones I especially enjoyed. You helped expand my mind to think so deeply about what we take for granted in everyday communication.

Meghan Vance Communication, 2002 Old Town, ME Graduate Student/Teaching Assistant Meghan.Vance@umit.maine.edu Hello, Lenny, Erika, Russ, Rebecca, and Rich! And hello Andrea Marchessault! We certainly had a good time at USM, thanks to great professors and an overall wonderful learning atmosphere! I have just finished my first semester as a graduate student in Communication and Journalism at the University of Maine in Orono. UMaine is great! I am also teaching Public Speaking as part of a teaching assistantship. Funny how they call us "assistants." I actually have my own classes full of nervous undergrads who hate speaking in public! The teaching is fun, and who knows? Maybe some day I will be teaching back at USM! I would like to thank all of my professors for making my experience at USM such a great one! Erika Anderson, my role model, thank you for believing in me, and encouraging me to apply to grad school! For anyone interested in grad school at UMaine, feel free to e-mail me at Meghan.Vance@umit.maine.edu if you would like. Take care!!
