The Extended Teacher Education Program (ETEP) is a post-baccalaureate
program for those seeking teacher certification. It consists
of two distinct phases: the internship; and the Master ’s
degree. One of the greatest assets of this program is the variety
of options available to students. ETEP offers three
options:
ETEP Nine Month Option (K-8 or 7-12)
ETEP Unified for K-8 General Education and K-8
Special Education Option
ETEP Unified Secondary Education and Special Education
Option (7-12)
In the three options, interns engage in teaching activities in public schools under the supervision of a mentor teacher. Interns complete courses designed to help them learn subject area methods, knowledge of student development, and features of curriculum construction and assessment. This program design assures that an intern will complete all of the necessary academic and knowledge area requirements for certification by the State of Maine.
ETEP Nine Month Option (K-8 and 7-12)
The nine month, 33 credit hour program, is an intense and exciting full-time experience that integrates both theory and practice in a school-based program. Beginning in mid-August and continuing through May, interns complete two semesters with a mentor teacher in a public school classroom. This internship serves as a hands-on learning laboratory. It prepares people to teach in one of the following areas:
- Elementary and middle level (K-8)
- English (7-12)
- Foreign Language (K-12)
- Life Science (7-12)
- Mathematics (7-12)
- Physical Science (7-12)
- Social Studies (7-12)
ETEP Unified for K-8 General and K-8 Special Education Option
In response to the state’s urgent need for special education teachers, ETEP offers a unique program in this area. Students who choose this option complete the program in two academic years (four semesters) and two summers. This 54 credit hour program is designed so that interns may work part-time. It is especially designed for persons employed in schools as educational technicians who want to remain in their position while completing an internship in general education and special education. Upon completion of all requirements, students are recommended for certification in both K-8 general education and K-8 special education and receive a Master’s degree in special education.
The ETEP Unified Secondary and Special Education Option
(7-12 and 7-12 Special Education)
There have been dramatic changes in special education at the secondary level over the past few years. In an increasingly complex contemporary secondary school environment, special education teachers and content area teachers together must ensure that all students meet high academic standards. Beginning in the Fall of 2006, a unified secondary general education and special education program will be offered. The Unified 7-12 ETEP option, like its Unified K-8 ETEP counterpart, is a graduate level education option for those applicants aspiring to be highly qualified educators in an inclusive school environment.
