Diversity Initiatives

CEHD Multicultural Learning Collaborative

Inaugurated Spring, 2002, the CEHD Multicultural Learning Collaborative’s (MLC) was charged with forging collaborations with members of all Maine’s diverse communities in the interest of better preparing educators and human development professionals for ethical and effective practice in an increasingly multicultural world.

To achieve this, the MLC initiated and sustained conversations with community partners about K-20 education about shared interests and about initial and advanced preparation of teachers, educational leaders, and human development professionals.

Acknowledging that faculty commitment is vital to keeping the CEHD Diversity Action Plan current and relevant, the MLC has called for models of good practice and continued dialogue about the College ongoing commitment to diversity initiatives, such as teaching for equity.

The MLC meets monthly. It sponsors professional development activities, such as workshops and Communities of Practice, and plans an annual workshop called Equity Day for students in USM’s initial teacher certification programs.
