Starting Over: Understanding and Supporting Refugee and Immigrant Experiences

The stories of four University of Southern Maine students reveal challenges, resilience, and determination.

The sensitive insights of four refugee and immigrant students at the University Southern Maine tell us about adapting to change, drawing strength from one's own culture, making adjustments, and remaining positive. Their thoughts offer much to peers, teachers, helping professionals, community members, and others for becoming effective allies and mentors.

Located in Maine's largest city, now home to many refugees and immigrants of all backgrounds, the University of Southern Maine recognizes that diversity enriches the entire learning community. It is committed to providing support services for a multicultural student body.

Produced by Robert Atkinson, Ph. D. the DVD , with captions, runs 17 minutes. Funded by University of Southern Maine grant program for Collaborative Research on Maine's Multicultural Communities.

This video can be purchased directly from the Center for the Study of Lives for $20.  Please call, email, or write the Center to order your copy.
