What is Project Pathways?

Pathways to Higher Education for Educational Technicians provides financial support and comprehensive individualized education planning for non-certified bilingual educational technicians and language facilitators.  This program will help bilingual educational technicians and language facilitators complete an associate's degree or sixty (60) college credits, a requirement for all paraprofessionals under No Child Left behind (NCLB). 

 

What are the project's services?

 

  • Résumé and transcript review
  • Orientation to higher education
  • Academic support such as computer skills development, ESL classes, tutoring, test preparation, and study skills
  • Referrals to relevant support agencies and resources
  • Assistance on financial/scholarship eligibility and tuition reimbursement
  • Individual career counseling and educational planning.

 


 
 

What credits do participants need to obtain an associate's degree?
 

  • 31 Credits    
    Core Curriculum Requirements

  • 29 Credits    
    Electives from the College of Arts and Sciences

  • 60 Credits    Total

 

Who are the participants in the project?

The project participants are 19 bilingual ed techs and native language facilitators who work as paraprofessionals in Portland Public Schools.  They come from Afghanistan, Cambodia, El Salvador, Somalia, Sudan, Vietnam, and the former Yugoslavia.  The languages spoken by these participants include Arabic, Acholi, Dari, French, Khmer, Nuer, Serbo-Croatian, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese.  These paraprofessionals have a variety of educational backgrounds, experiences, and career goals.  Each of these participants vary in the courses they need to complete their Associate's Degree.  Some have taken some college courses and others have not.

 


 

Who are the sponsors of the project?

 

Project Pathways is a partnership between USM's Multicultural Education Programs and Portland Public Schools.  It is  funded by the State Department of Education through I.D.E.A.
