The University of Southern Maine (USM), in collaboration with the University of Maine-Machias (UMM), will be offering a 54 credit graduate degree in rehabilitation counseling, beginning in the summer of 2010. The masters degree in counseling will be granted through USM and the curriculum will be available primariliy through distance education technologies, including the following formats: ITV (interactive television), videoconferencing, and online. In addition, selected classes will be taught on-campus at U.M.M. The USM program is nationally accredited through the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) and students who complete the three and a half year program program will be eligible for national certification as a rehabilitation counselor. Students who decide to take an additional three classes of targeted coursework will be eligible for state licensure as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC).

The program will be available to a cohort of 10-12 students from the Washington and Hancock counties area who will take a specifically designed and sequenced curriculum consisting of six credits per semester, including summers. Classes will be scheduled at locations and times convenient for working students, such as online, on-campus (UMM) and in the late afternoon and evenings via distance technologies. Classes offered on-site at UMM will be taught by local, qualified faculty.

Rehabilitation counselors work with individuals and their surrounding communities to assist people with physical, intellectual, sensory, and/or psychiatric impairments to achieve their life goals. Underlying the practice of rehabilitation counseling are core values such as: community inclusion and full societal participation for persons with disabilities; individual choice and control of personal goals and services; equitable access to societal opportunities and resources; and ethical and effective professional practice.

The deadline for admissions to the program is February 1, 2010.
