The New Student Orientation is an opportunity for us to provide new students with some resources that might help maximize their experience as a student at USM.  We have an outstanding department that has a reputation for quality programs, superior students, and a group of faculty and staff who really enjoy working with one another...and with you.  So welcome to the department.

One of the issues that we try to stress at the orientation is the importance of meeting with your advisor at your earliest convenience.  Your initial meeting should serve two very important purposes: 1) establishing a relationship between the two of you that can serve as a foundation for future meetings, phone calls, crises and triumphs, and a base of support; and 2) to map out a tentative plan for your graduate program, so that a feasible timetable is addressed and questions about special program requirements are answered.  So, we encourage you to give your advisor a call right away.

Be sure to visit us online at http://www.usm.maine.edu/cehd/Counselor-Education/index.htm. Please create some time to thoroughly explore the CEHD and program’s web pages.

Throughout the year you will receive e-mails about program deadlines, notices of upcoming programs and college activities, and registration information. If your e-mail and/or home address changes, please notify Kerry Bertalan immediately at bertalan@usm.maine.edu or (207) 780-5316.

Early in your program, we hope you will join the professional association that aligns with your program or concentration. We also hope you will take advantage of the wonderful student and alumni associations. These groups provide another source of support, networking, and professional development that will enhance your educational experience.  Look for more information about these groups when you begin classes.

We want you to feel a part of the USM community--and especially the College of Education and Human Development and the Department of Human Resource Development--and hope you will take advantage of the many opportunities offered throughout the campus.  We also hope this packet of information can assist you as you embark upon your graduate school experience so that you feel informed and connected to what's going on.  So, once again, welcome...and let us know if there is something we can do to enhance your role as a learner here.
