Diversity Scholar Events Scheduled for Spring

The CEHD has appointed Bette Katsekas as the CEHD Diversity Scholar for 2008-2010. Professor Katsekas, a counselor education faculty member also co-chairs the CEHD Human Resource Development Department’s diversity committee and serves on the USM President’s Council on Diversity. The CEHD Diversity Scholar is a full-time CEHD faculty member who is charged with providing research, and teaching and learning leadership to the Multicultural Learning Collaborative, a group with membership from all of Maine’s diverse communities that serve to better prepare educators and human development professionals for ethical and effective practice in an increasingly multicultural world.

Katsekas has designed a strong program for spring focusing on altruism and resilience. Some of the featured events will be film documentaries, discussions and presentations on topics of the Danish Solution, the Greek-American experience, Maine’s transgender community, and survival of those who lived through the Khmer Rogue regime in Cambodia. This diverse and in-depth series concludes with a presentation on the theme of the diversity scholar’s work, “Civility, Wellness, and Ways of Knowing.”
