Students at USM finance their education in many ways. This page is designed to help you gather information about your options.

Tuition and Fees
Each year, the University of Maine System sets USM tuition rates for the coming academic year. For 2007-2008, tuition rates are:

Undergraduate
Maine Resident............$198/credit hour
Non-Resident...............$547/credit hour
NEBHE...........................$297/credit hour		 Graduate
Maine Resident............$297/credit hour
Non-Resident...............$844/credit hour
NEBHE...........................$446/credit hour

Financial Aid
Many undergraduate students receive some type of assistance through the USM Office of Financial Aid. Undergraduate students may be eligible for federal and state grants, work-study, and loans, in addition to scholarships.

Graduate students commonly obtain loans, both subsidized and unsubsidized, to assist with their expenses. Half-time students (those taking at least six graduate credit hours per semester) are usually eligible for loans to cover tuition, books, and assist with living expenses. Full-time students (those taking at least 12 graduate credits per semester) are usually eligible for loans to cover tuition, fees, books and assist with living expenses. There are few government grant programs for graduate students; however, graduate students may be eligible for scholarships from university and private sources.

CEHD Graduate Assistantships
The College of Education and Human Development has a limited number of graduate assistantships available to degree students in CEHD graduate programs who will enroll in at least six graduate credit hours each semester while employed. Assistantships are typically 10 - 20 hours per week. Depending on the type of assistantship, assistants are paid a monthly stipend based on the hours worked per week and may receive credit toward tuition depending on position (see application for details).

Awards are usually made in late spring for the following academic year. Applications should be submitted by March 1 for priority consideration. Applications are available in the Dean's Office, 117 Bailey Hall.

University Assistantships (Teaching and General)
The Office of Graduate Studies has a number of general and teaching assistantships available to all graduate students at the University of Southern Maine. Teaching assistantships are assigned to an individual faculty member teaching an undergraduate core course in a variety of fields. Applications are available at the Office of Graduate Studies (www.usm.maine.edu/~grad/) 39 Exeter Street, Portland Campus.

CEHD Scholarships
The College of Education and Human Development has over 30 scholarship funds from which it awards more than $85,000 in scholarship monies each year. These scholarships are available to eligible students matriculated in CEHD programs who are taking at least six credit hours during the semesters for which they are receiving aid. Awards are made in the spring of each year for the following academic year.
