Prospective Students
Distance Learning Options
To meet the region's needs, some of our programs offer distance learning courses. Our courses may be offered through:
- University College
- ITV (interactive television at sites around the state)
- Web-based (Blackboard)
- Off-site Cohorts
The following programs offer distance learning options:
Adult Education
Student wishing to complete the master of science in adult education from a distance can do so by selecting online courses during the fall and spring semesters, and by taking one -week intensive campus-based electives during the summer.
Counselor Education
Our counselor education program offers not only Rehabilitation Distance options but some general core Counseling courses which include our School and Mental Health Concentrations that can be taken over ITV or fiber.
Rehabilitation Counseling
In addition to the campus-based program at Gorham, the master of science in counseling, rehabilitation counseling concentration is offered completely through distance learning technologies, enabling students from around the state to enroll. Off campus students register for courses through University College (207) 621-3408 or 1-800--868-7000 although in order to matriculate, all students must go through the USM admission process www.usm.maine.edu/admit
Unified ETEP (K-8 general education and K-8 special educational)
The unified ETEP program is a state-wide program in which educational technicians (who have successfully completed a bachelor degree) in schools around the state can complete their master of science in special education through USM.
Literacy Education
The master of science in education in literacy education is offered in its entirety at the Lewiston-Auburn campus of USM. Though technically not a distance learning option, the Lewiston-Auburn campus is a closer alternative than Gorham or Portland for students who live in western and central Maine.
The literacy program also offers its Certificate Program in its entirety at the University College in Bath and Rockland.
