Applying to the Program
The Literacy Education program is designed to provide educators with a
thorough understanding of literacy development, process, and instruction.
Because literacy is the foundation for school success in every curricular
area, and it profoundly affects the personal lives of all citizens, the
importance of effective literacy teaching and learning cannot be overemphasized.
The purpose of the program is to develop and support leaders in literacy
education. Commitment to the promotion of multicultural literacy is reflected
in an ESL concentration, the only one of its kind in Maine.
The
Literacy Education program offers several options for students who wish to
advance their knowledge and skills:
A certificate in literacy is available for those who wish to begin acquiring a basic background in literacy without committing to a Master's degree program.
A certificate in Early Language and Literacy is for those who wish to have a thorough understanding of the development of early language and concepts that are foundational to understanding and using printed language.
A M.S. Ed. in Applied Literacy is available for those who wish to engage in a full program of study following their ETEP or TEAMS program.
A M.S. Ed. in Literacy Education is available for those who wish to engage in a full program of study leading to an advanced degree.
Two Certificates of Advanced Study is offered to those who hold a Master's degree and want to pursue their own course of study based on their current professional needs and aspirations, or on English as a second language.
