General Information
Course Location
Most CCE classes and programs will be held at the Abromson Community Education Center, 88 Bedford Street, USM Portland campus.
Office Hours
8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except holidays.
Adult Learners
Programs at CCE are intended for adult learners. You must be 18 or older to register.
Registration Confirmations
Registrations will be confirmed by e-mail unless a mail confirmation is requested at time of registration.
Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
CCE issues CEU activity reports and maintains student transcripts for 7 years for students who participate in noncredit continuing education programs at USM. For CEU information, call 780-5960.
ANCC Contact Hours
CCE is an approved provider of continuing nursing education activity by ANA-Maine, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center Commission on Accreditation.
Non-profit Discount
Nonprofit organizations receive a 20% discount for courses in the Business and Management catalog (special restrictions may apply to certain programs.) This discount must be requested at registration and is available when registering by phone or fax.
Access Accomodations
The University provides reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities upon request. If you need an interpreter, please let us know as soon as possible. If we are unable to secure an interpreter we will refund your course fee.
Course Cancellations
- CCE courses require a minimum number of students to be registered in order for the class to be held. If your class is cancelled due to low enrollment, we will notify you at least 3 days before the class is scheduled to begin. If your class is cancelled you may either request a full refund or transfer to another course.
- For weather emergencies please call the CCE at (207) 780-5900 or the USM Storm Line at (207) 780-4800 for class status. The recording for storm scheduling begins at 6:00 a.m. and will be updated as necessary.

Course Waivers for Certificate Programs
If you wish to waive a course based on previous experience or training, please request a waiver in writing. Your request should outline your qualifications and include documentation (resume or course transcripts). Decisions on course waivers will be made by CCE and the course instructor. Only one course per certificate program may be waived. A $20 waiver fee will be charged. Waivers will not be granted once a course begins.
Refund Policy
- If you withdraw from a class 5 or more business days before the start date, you will receive a 100% refund of course fees.
- If you withdraw 4 working days or less from the start date, you will receive a course voucher for 50% of the course fee paid.
- Refunds do not include the cost of materials.
- There are no refunds once a class begins.

While the feedback we receive from students indicates a very high level of satisfaction with the quality of our programs, we realize there may be situations where a student is genuinely dissatisfied with a course. If you feel a course did not deliver what was promised, please contact us.

Campus Safety
The Jean Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998 requires universities to disclose three years of statistics regarding campus crime, including off-campus buildings the University owns, and on public property adjacent to campus in Portland, Gorham, and Lewiston. The USM report (Safety and Security Information Report) also includes policies for campus security, such as those concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes and sexual assaults, and other related matters.
