Putting It All Together! An RN Refresher Course:

This course is designed for registered nurses who plan to return to nursing practice in an acute or subacute setting. The course utilizes a case study approach to facilitate discussion and critical thinking pertaining to neurological, respiratory, cardiac, vascular, renal and gastrointestinal disorders. Each lecture will include:

  • Pathophysiology
  • Assessment data
  • Laboratory results
  • Medical intervention
  • Nursing intervention
  • Pharmacology
  • Evidence-based practice
  • Nursing process

Using clinical scenarios, participants will utilize the nursing process, with emphasis on critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills, in the care of patients. Skill sessions will be offered as well as simulation experiences. Skills that will be reviewed and practiced include:

  • Suctioning
  • Trach care
  • Nasogastric tube insertion, care and maintenance
  • Foley catheter insertion
  • Dressing changes
  • IV care and management
  • Chest tube management
  • IV medication administration and calculations
  • Central line management
  • Enteral feeding
  • Head-to-toe assessment
  • Medication calculations including IV calculations
  • PCA and pain assessment

Participants will correlate pathophysiological processes with assessment findings, laboratory results, nursing and medical interventions, and pharmacotherapy for selected case studies. Opportunity for psychomotor skill development will be integrated in a laboratory setting during the full-day Saturday session.

Gail Marchigiano, CCRN, M.S.N., has been a nurse educator and critical care nurse for over 20 years. Her area of expertise is in adult health, and her major area of research and publication relates to medical surgical nursing. Gail maintains her clinical expertise in the intensive care unit of a tertiary care facility. She has presented at regional and national conferences.

Melinda Zimmer-Rankin, R.N., M.S., CCRN, CSC has many years' experience in critical care nursing and as a nurse educator. As founder of Nurse Consultant Services (NCS), she serves as a nurse consultant/educator for various health care agencies throughout New England.

Class will meet for 8 Thursday evenings (5/8, 5/15, 5/22, 5/29, 6/5, 6/12, 6/19, 6/26) from 6pm - 9pm and one Saturday (6/28) from 9am - 4pm. First class on 5/8 begins at 5:30 PM. Alternative Saturday Skills Lab date is 21st. (2 Saturday dates are allotted in case of a large class size. Participants only need to attend one Saturday lab. June 21st will only be used if class size is large).
