Advising

Advising is central to a student's academic success. It is a collaborative process in which the student and her/his faculty advisor engage in exploring courses of study, career options, and supplemental experiences that may enrich classroom learning such as internships, volunteer activities, and service learning. Both the student and the faculty advisor have responsibilities in this important process of linking student goals and outcomes with those of the major.

There are many facets to the advising process. In the College of Arts and Sciences, we want to ensure that students have the tools, including access to information and resources, that will be necessary for them to achieve academic success at the University of Southern Maine. The information provided here is intended to be a supplement to the faculty advising received within the major.

After you have explored this site, take specific questions to your faculty advisor or contact Pam Edwards, Director of Student Academic Affairs and CAS Advising. Asking questions is key to getting good information that will serve you during your academic career. See also General Advising Resources for further guidance in the advising process.
