About the College

Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Southern Maine. We are a vibrant academic community, deeply committed to the ideals of liberal arts and sciences education. In contemporary rhetoric the term 'liberal' has several connotations. In the context of liberal arts and sciences education, it refers to an ethos aimed at inculcating in our students a sense of curiosity, a quest for learning and knowledge, and an awareness of the world around them in all its facets. Our faculty and staff strive hard to provide an educational experience that enables our students to take ownership of their learning and allows them to be intentional life long learners.

We are a large and diverse college, offering programs and courses in areas of teaching and learning as varied as visual and performing arts, humanities, natural sciences and mathematics, and social sciences. We are proud of the excellence of our faculty as teacher-scholars and their abiding commitment to core academic values vital for creation and dissemination of knowledge. Although very active researchers, scholars and artists, the faculty are easily accessible to students both inside and outside the classroom. Our relatively small sized classes and our academic support structure provide students ample opportunities to engage in substantive and meaningful interaction with the faculty. Experiential learning is well integrated into our curricula. Our students routinely participate in faculty research projects, internships, artistic endeavors, service learning projects and study abroad programs. We believe it is important to provide students with hands-on experience and promote Îlearning by doingâ.

In short, we offer prospective students a choice to pursue education characterized by quality academic programs, which are developed and delivered by excellent faculty intensely focused on student learning.
