CAREER SERVICES &
PROFESSIONAL LIFE DEVELOPMENT

Welcome Students!

Welcome to new and returning USM students. We look forward to working with you to help ensure a successful year. We'll be attending all the welcome events, so be sure
to stop by and say "hello".  We're here to help you with your career path, whether it
is choosing your major, finding a work-study or other job, or figuring out what you
want to do with your life after graduation.

IM a Career Counselor

Need to schedule an appointment or get quick advice from a career counselor? Do you live off-campus, in the residence halls, or have difficulty getting to campus? Are you familiar with instant messaging (IM)?

The "IM a Career Counselor" program at Career Services is a great way to connect
with career counselors right from the comfort and convenience of home, office, or dorm. The program is designed as a convenient way to help students get answers quickly. Career counselors will assist you with any of your immediate concerns regarding career decision making, resume/interviewing skills, job search strategies, graduate school, upcoming events, and a variety of other services the office provides. "IM the Career Counselor" is free to all USM students throughout the spring and fall semesters.

Getting Started

  • IM is available Monday-Thursday from 1:00pm-4:00pm
  • It is accessible from the library, computer labs, dorms, and off-campus computers.

How to Use  Meebo:

  • You can access this service from this page, using the Meebo box below.
  • You do not need an account to use this service.
  • Verify that the box states, "USM Career Counselor is online", then type your question. The Career Counselor will respond.
  • Be sure to keep your browser open for the duration of your chat session.

Helpful Hint

  • It is helpful if you edit the nickname on the bottom of the box before typing,
so that the counselor can identify you more easily if more than one person is IMing at the same time.

If you leave us a message, you must keep this page open for us to be able to answer you.

If you are having difficulty accessing or using this service, please email Career Services for more information.

Walk-in Hours Fall Semester 2008

EFFECTIVE: 09/02/2008 - 12/24/2008

Walk-in services provide students the opportunity to talk with a career specialist. No matter what your career question, we're here to help. Stop by!

Walk-in periods are designed to assist students who have brief questions or are in
need of a resume critique. If your resume is more than one page in length, an appointment may be required.

Walk-in's are on a first-come, first-serve basis and the number of students that
can be seen during each period is limited.

Students arriving in the final 10 minutes of any Walk-in period will be seen only if the Career Counselor's appointment schedule will allow.

FYI ... Walk-in periods can sometimes be hectic and you may need to wait your turn.
The counselor on duty will get to you as quickly as possible.  If you are traveling to campus just for the Walk-in period, we suggest you call first to confirm there are no last minute schedule changes affecting the schedule.

Walk-ins will not be held on days we have large events, such as our career fairs.

Fall Walk-In Hours

Our hours for walk-ins are subject to change.

  • Wednesdays: 9:00am - 4:00pm
  • Thursdays: 9:00am - 4:00pm

Can't come during Walk-in hours? Call us at 207-780-4220 (Portland) or
