Richard W. Petersen Richard W. Petersen serves as interim president and chief executive officer of Maine Medical Center – the state’s leading, nationally-recognized, tertiary, and quaternary medical center with a 140-year history of healing and community stewardship. As a not-for-profit organization with an annual budget in excess of $700 million, Maine Medical Center includes an active and robust medical educational program and a world-class research center. Prior to his appointment as interim president and CEO, he served as executive vice president and chief operating officer at Maine Medical Center for nine years. Before joining Maine Medical Center, Petersen served as senior vice president for Kaleida Health Systems located in Buffalo, New York, a l,600 bed system with a $1 billion annual budget. Petersen began his healthcare career in 1978 as an assistant administrator of a 101-bed community hospital located in Medina, New York, and, in 1984, was promoted to the position of chief executive officer. Between 1984 and 1996, he served as president and chief executive officer of a 134-bed community hospital and later served as chief executive officer of a network of seven hospitals and one long-term care facility. He is a principled and results-oriented leader with a proven track record in setting strategic direction, achieving positive financial performance, and developing highly effective teams. Petersen’s leadership style is engaging, pragmatic, forward thinking, and values-centered. With an appreciation of the value of an organization’s culture, he possesses a collaborative management style with a respect for others. Petersen is a pro-active problem solver with a calm and positive presence who is experienced in leading a complex, multi-site, matrixed organization. He earned a bachelor’s degree in health care administration from Ithaca College, Ithaca, New York, and holds a master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting and finance from Canisius College, Buffalo, New York. Petersen currently serves as a board member on New England Life Care, New England Organ Bank, The United Way of Greater Portland, and the University of Southern Maine. He is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. He and his wife Jane have two children and reside in South Portland.
