Norway Savings Bank Robert S. Blackwood, Jr., grew up in South Portland and attended South Portland public schools. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1969 with a B.A. in history. He then served five years is the U.S. Army, reaching the rank of captain. He spent most of his time in the Army in the Special Forces stationed in Thailand and Germany. After leaving the military on the same day as my Commander-in-Chief, Richard Nixon, Blackwood returned to Maine in 1974 and started an entry-level position at Casco Bank. It was at this same time that Blackwood began his relationship with USM. As a nontraditional student, he received an M.B.A. in 1978 and a B.S. in accounting in 1982 from USM. His professional life has been in the banking industry with a focus on commercial lending. He has worked primarily in the Portland area, but he has also worked in Lewiston-Auburn, Bangor, and in Rochester and Portsmouth, N.H. He is currently the senior vice president for commercial lending at Norway Savings Bank. Over the years Blackwood has increased his involvement with USM serving on the Alumni Association Board of Directors for many years including a term as president. He has worked on the USM Annual Fund campaign, USM's 21st Century Campaign for Excellence, and currently is working on the campaign to raise funds for USM's Joel and Linda Abromson Community Education Center. He is th chair of the USM Advocacy Steering Committee. Blackwood is a recipient of the Hilltop Award, one of the USM Alumni Association's top honors, and he and his wife, Jill, recently established a scholarship at USM for graduates of South Portland High School. The couple has two children.
