Return Policy
We have a liberal
and convenient textbook return policy. Refunds can be obtained at any
of our three locations, as long as the books were purchased from the
USM Bookstores. Refunds are given for the current semester only, within
the stated times for the term.
The last day to return Spring 2006
textbooks is January 31, 2006.
Returns must be
accompanied by a valid cash register receipt, and new textbooks may be
returned for a refund only if they are in new condition. DO NOT WRITE
IN ANY NEW TEXTBOOK OR OPEN SHRINK-WRAPPED PACKAGES BEFORE ATTENDING
YOUR FIRST CLASS! If you drop a class or otherwise decide you don't wish
to keep a book, we will be unable to refund your money for a new text
that has been marked or damaged, or a package which has been opened.
Used books must be in the same condition as when purchased.
All returns must
be accompanied by the original cash register receipt. New textbooks may
be returned for a refund if they are in NEW condition. Do not write in

USED Textbooks
We buy thousands
of used textbooks from students throughout Southern Maine and partner
with the leaders in the used book wholesale business to provide you access
to one of the Largest
Selections of Used Textbooks in
the state. Since our used books are less expensive than our new titles,
the ability to purchase Used
at the USM Stores has
great potential to result in Extra
Savings when
you shop with us.
New or
Used? Optional or Required?
Used texts cost less than new texts and are in great demand by our customers.
As a result, the USM Bookstores have one of the largest used book inventories
in the state. Used texts may be highlighted and underlined while new texts are
unmarked. Required texts have been listed by our faculty as necessary to meet
course requirements. Optional titles are suggested as valuable course supplements.
When in doubt, go to class before making a buying decision.

BUY BACK
Our goal is to buy as many of your books
as possible at 50% of the retail price. Buyback offers us
an opportunity to purchase books you no longer need. If the
books have resale value, we purchase them either retail (for the
bookstore) or wholesale (for a national wholesaler).
Retail books represent those titles our
campus instructors have adopted and, if in resalable condition,
generally earn 50% of the retail price until we reach our quota.
Wholesale books are purchased if they are not needed on our campus but have
a national demand. Prices vary depending on the demand, but can be up
to 35% of the retail price.
The Portland and Gorham bookstores buy textbooks throughout the year for a wholesale company, paying wholesale
prices. However, the best time to sell your books is during
final exam week in December and May. That's when we have the most
information about future book needs and are able to purchase books
at retail..
During finals week, we will pay
up to 50% of the new book price providing:
- the textbook is being used on one
of the USM campuses
- the textbook is in resalable condition
- the textbook is needed to fill the
bookstore's quota
The Lewiston Bookstore
buys back books during finals week.
