3 Ways To Order Your Textbooks

- TECHNICAL YET EASY-
Shop Our Website!  There is a link over in the left hand column under Merchandise.  If you'd rather fax your order in, please print  the Textbook Order Form and fax it to: (207) 780-4139.

-GIVE US A CALL-
Please have your schedule in front of you when you call.  We can take your payment info over the phone and hold on to your paid books until you arrive, or mail them to your home.

-COME SEE US-
As always, we love to see our customers in person.  We have three locations.  The Portland Bookstore is located in the Woodbury Campus Center on the Portland Campus. The Gorham Bookstore is located in the Brooks Student Center on the Gorham Campus.  The Lewiston Bookstore is located at 51 Westminster Street.

Course Numbers have three parts, and these are what we use to find your books.  A Course number looks like this:  MAT 108 G5460.  MAT is the department.  108 tells us the content or level of the class.  G5460 is the CRN, also known as a Section Number.  The letter shows which campus a class is held on, and the number specifies exactly which section of MAT 108 to find books from.  Two classes with the same title but different professors do not necessarily use the same books.

Payment Options include cash, USM Card, VISA, MASTERCARD, DISCOVER CARD, and personal checks. A picture ID and your student ID number are required for check purchases.  When you give a card number over the phone, it is kept in a secure area until the books are charged.  We destroy the number right afterward, and do not keep it anywhere.

Textbook Return Policy  Refunds can be obtained at any of our three locations, as long as the books were purchased from the USM Bookstores. Refunds are given for the current semester only, within the stated times for the term.  Traditionally, returns are accepted within the first two weeks of classes during the Fall and Spring Semesters.  Summer Semester has it's own return policy.  A copy of the return policy should be stapled to your  receipts.

Returns must be accompanied by a valid cash register receipt, and new textbooks may be returned for a refund only if they are in new condition. DO NOT WRITE IN ANY NEW TEXTBOOK OR OPEN SHRINK-WRAPPED PACKAGES BEFORE ATTENDING YOUR FIRST CLASS! If you drop a class or otherwise decide you don't wish to keep a book, we will be unable to refund your money for a new text that has been marked or damaged, or a package which has been opened. Used books must be in the same condition as when purchased.

TEXTBOOK BUYBACK
Cash For Books

Students with a photo ID can bring books in anytime and try to sell them in the Portland, Gorham, and Lewiston stores.  To get the most money for them, we recommend selling your books during final exam week in December and May.  Before the official Buyback begins, posters will be posted around campus with the dates.  There will also be an ad in the Free Press.

How Much $$ Will You Get
When You Sell Back
Your Books During Buyback?

The amount of cash you get depends almost entirely on what books professors have chosen to use for the following semester.

-When a book is going to be used, we generally give 50% of the retail price, until we've bought back enough copies.  If it came as part of a package, bring in all the pieces if you have them.
-If the book is not going to be used here at USM but has a national demand, we can buy for a textbook wholesaler that will give up to 35% of the retail price.
-If the book is not in demand, we cannot buy it.  It is a good idea however, to hold on to these kinds of books and try them again at the next Buyback.  If the book is an old edition, will will never be able to buy it.  We always have a donation box for no value books if you wish for your book to be sent to a country in need.

*We cannot buy water damaged books, instructor editions,
or books with missing covers.

New or Used?
Optional or Required?

Used texts cost less than new texts
and are in great demand by our
customers. As a result, the
USM Bookstores have one of the
largest used book inventories in the
state. Used texts may be highlighted
and underlined while new texts are unmarked.
Required texts have
been listed by our faculty as
necessary to meet course
requirements. Optional titles are
suggested as valuable course supplements.

During finals week, we will
pay up to 50% of the new
book price providing:

  • the textbook is being used on
    one of the USM campuses
  • the textbook is in resalable condition
  • the textbook is needed to fill
    the bookstore's quota
