What are the ethical issues in tissue collection?

The following ethical issues should be considered by an IRB or other research ethics committeee that evaluates repository collaborations:

  1. ensuring appropriate donor informed consent for tissue donation
  2. protecting donor privacy with samples and clinical information
  3. ensuring that tissue donation does not conflict with patient care
  4. examining any potential conflicts of interest for staff and the medical center
  5. protecting the integrity of the medical center
  6. assessing community interest and perceptions of a collaboration
  7. evaluating the ethical policies and standards of the repository (Is it a suitable partner for collaboration?)
