Southern Maine Names Schoner, Stephenson and Young Wrestling Captains
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Steve Young (Rochester, N.Y./Wayne Central),
junior Shane Stephenson (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) and sophomore Robert Schoner
(Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) have each been named captains for the 2006-2007
University of Southern Maine Huskies wrestling team. Head coach Joe Pistone
made the announcement.
Stephenson finished his sophomore campaign with a respectable 8-8 overall
record that included two pins. Wrestling in the 157-pound division, Stephenson
was 5-5 in tournament matches, highlighted by a fifth place finish at the Roger
Williams University Invitational, and 3-3 in dual meet competition.
As a freshman, Schoner compiled a 13-12 overall mark competing in both the
174-pound and 184-pound weight classes. Led by a fourth-place finish in the
174-pound weight division at the Oneonta Red Dragon Invitational, Schoner was
5-6 in tournament competition and 8-6 in dual meets.
Young earned Pilgrim League Honor Mention All-Star and NECCWA All-New
England honors in 2006, finishing the season with an 8-7 overall record and a
3-8 mark in dual meet competition while wrestling in the 197-pound division.
Young was the 197-pound division champion at the Plymouth State Invitational
last season and placed sixth at the NECCWA Championships in the same division to
earn NECCWA honors.
"Rob, Shane and Steve understand and have accepted the fact that their
leadership will be vital to our overall success this year," commented Pistone,
now in his fourth season as the Huskies' head coach. "All three have worked
very hard towards the development of the program.
"Their role this season will be to continue to set positive examples on the
wrestling mat, in the classroom, socially and in the community. I have complete
confidence that these (three) will responsibly lead this season's team. As a
coaching staff, we are extremely proud to have them represent the USM wrestling
team."
Southern Maine begins its 2006-2007 season this Saturday (November 4)

travel for two more tournaments during the month, traveling to the Roger
Williams University Invitational (November 11, 10:00 a.m.) and the Oneonta State
(NY) Invitational (November 18, 9:30 a.m.).
