USM's Valastro Named Pilgrim League Rookie Wrestler of the Week

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman grappler Stephen Valastro (Montgomery, N.Y./Val-
ley Central) of the University of Southern Maine wrestling team has been named
the Pilgrim League Rookie Wrestler of the Week for the week of November 14-20.
Valastro, wrestling at 125 pounds, had a phenomenal week for the Huskies
earning five of his team-leading 10 wins competing in a dual meet and an
invitational tournament.
In Southern Maine's lone dual meet of November, Valastro made quick work of
University of New Hampshire's Ryan Clay, pinning Clay in 1:56. At the 2005
Oneonta State Red Dragon Wrestling Invitational, Valastro, the second seed in
his weight division, cruised to four wins en route to a first place finish. He
was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler for his efforts.
Valastro is just the second USM wrestler to ever earn Most Outstanding
Wrestler honors for any tournament in the eight-year history of the Husky
program. The first USM grappler to earn the honor was Husky standout Adam
Farrington. Farrington, a 174-pound competitor, was named the Most Outstanding
Wrestler at the 2001 New England College Conference Wrestling Association
Championships.
"Both awards are great for Stephen," commented third-year head coach Joe
Pistone. "Stephen is the type of student-athlete that pushes himself everyday
with the goal of being the best wrestler he can be and being named a
tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler and then being named as the league's
rookie of the week helps validate Stephen's work ethic and commitment. "
At the tournament, Valastro pinned two of his opponents to increase his
fall total to a team-leading six. Valastro started off the tournament pinning
Cortland State's Nick Datillo and followed with an 8-2 decision over Ted
Furantani of Rochester Institute of Technology. Valastro's second fall of the
tournament came when he pinned Rich Russell of Scranton to the mat in 3:59. In
the championship bout of the division, Valastro earned a 7-2 decision over top-
seed Felipe Queiroz of Wilkes University.
Valastro holds a 10-1 mark in his 11 matches for a .909 winning percentage.
Southern Maine returns to action Saturday, December 3 at UMass Amherst.
Match time has yet to be announced.

USM Places Fifth at Oneonta State Wrestling Invitational
                    Valastro Named Most Outstanding Wrestler

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Freshman grappler Stephen Valastro (Montgomery,

University of Southern Maine Huskies to a fifth place finish at the 2005 Oneonta
State Red Dragons Wrestling Invitational, Sunday in Oneonta, N.Y.
The Huskies finished fifth with 93 points. It is the second time this
season that the Huskies have taken fifth place at an invitational tournament,
replicating their fifth place finish at the 2005 Roger Williams Invitational
earlier in the season. Wilkes University placed first overall with 141 points
and was followed by Cortland State (127.5 points), New York University (118.5
points) and host Oneonta State (101 points).
Valastro, the second seed in his weight class, won the 125-pound division
earning a 7-2 decision over top-seed Felipe Queiroz of Wilkes. Valastro
wrestled remarkably for the Huskies earning two pins en route to the individual
weight class championship.
Five more Southern Maine wrestlers placed in the top six in their
respective weight divisions. Freshmen Rob Schoner (Sussex, Wisc./Hamilton) and
Dan Waite (Canton, Maine/Dirigo) each placed fourth for the Huskies wrestling at
174 and 285 respectively, while freshman Matt Andrikut (Slate Hill,
N.Y./Minisink Valley) took fifth place in the 184-pound division. Also placing

wrestling at 157. Rounding out the Huskies top finishers was freshman Brandon
Comstock (North Java, N.Y./Attica Central) who placed sixth wrestling at 165.

Stephenson, Flowers, Young and Dietzal Named USM Wrestling Captains

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Don Flowers (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford),
sophomores Brian Dietzal (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) and Shane Stephenson (Pine
Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) and newcomer Steve Young (Wayne, N.Y./Wayne Central) have
been named captains of the University of Southern Maine Huskies wrestling team
for the 2005-2006 season.
"I am very excited and proud about the selection of this year's team
captains," noted third-year head coach Joe Pistone. "All four of these student-
athletes possess the desire, dedication and necessary leadership skills to aid
our team in achieving its goals (this season)."
Flowers, who wrestled in the 141 and 149-pound weight divisions, compiled a
4-13 record as a sophomore, including two pins. Dietzal, who competed sparingly
in the 2004-2005 season, finished the year with a 0-1 record wresting at 141
pounds. Stephenson, who competed in the 157 and 165-pound weight classes, ended
the season with an 11-18 mark, including four pins and five wins by decision.
Young, a transfer from Alfred State College in New York, was a two-time national
qualifier for the Blue and Gold.
"Don was a freshman when I began at USM and I am proud of his development
as a student-athlete," said Pistone. "The last two seasons, he has earned the
team's "Iron Man" award for his dedication, determination and hard-work both in
the classroom and on the mat. He is the personification of the term leader.
"Shane and Brian are both true students of the sport," commented Pistone.
"Shane embodies all the qualities a coach and team want in a captain, and is one
of the universities top student-athletes.
"Brian has set the tone for our upcoming season," continued Pistone. "He
continues to be a role model in and out of the classroom and leads by his
actions.
"Steve's selection as captain is a direct correlation to his work ethic and
dedication," noted Pistone. "He is a fine example of what determination can
achieve. During his two year's at Alfred State, Steve successfully earned his
associate's degree and excelled on the mat."
Southern Maine opens the 2005-06 season at the Roger Williams Invitational
(Nov. 12, 10:00 a.m.). The Huskies travel to the University of New Hampshire
(Nov. 18, 7:30 p.m.) and to the SUNY Oneonta Invitational (Nov. 20, 9:30 a.m.)
to close out the month.
In December, the Huskies have two dates of competition with a match against
the University of Massachusetts Amherst club team (Dec. 3, tba) followed by the
Ted Reese Invitational (Dec. 10, 10:00 a.m.). The Ted Reese Invitational, named
after long-time USM wrestling coach Ted Reese, is the first of three home events
scheduled this season.
Southern Maine opens the New Year at home hosting Stevens Institute of
Technology and New York University (Jan. 7, 2:00 p.m.) before competing in a
string of five consecutive away events. The Huskies travel to Worcester
Polytechnic Institute (Jan. 9, 7:00 p.m.) and Western New England College (Jan.
12, 7:00 p.m.), followed by back-to-back trips to Plymouth State University for
the Plymouth State Invitational (Jan. 14, 10:00 a.m.) and a dual meet with the
Panthers (Jan. 18, 7:00 p.m.). The Huskies conclude their road trip at
Bridgewater State College for the NECCWA Duals (Jan. 22, 11:00 a.m.). In its
next contest, Southern Maine hosts Bridgewater State and M.I.T. in its final
home event of the season (Jan. 25, 5:00 p.m.) before closing out the month on
the road at Wesleyan with Johnson & Wales (Jan. 28, 12:00 p.m.).
In February, the Huskies compete in three events beginning with a tri-match
at Trinity College along with the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (Feb. 2, 5:00 p.m.).
That event is followed by a tri-meet at Roger Williams along with Rhode Island
College (Feb. 5, 1:00 p.m.). The Huskies conclude the 2005-06 regular-season
with a two-day trip to Wesleyan University to compete in the New England
Championships Tournament (Feb. 24-25).
