Hamilton and Waite Named USM Wrestling Captains

GORHAM, Maine - Senior Phil Hamilton (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan) and junior
Matt Waite (Canton, Maine/Mt. Blue) have been named captains of the 2004-2005
University of Southern Maine wrestling team.
"I am very happy with the selection of Phil and Matt as captains for this
year's squad," said second-year head coach Joe Pistone. "Heading into this
season, the team knew that we had to pinpoint the right qualities that are needed
from our captains to accomplish our team goals. Matt and Phil were selected by
their teammates for their leadership qualities both on and off of the mat. Their
teammates respect their abilities and want to be around the success they have
achieved, and the new athletes look up to both Phil and Matt."
Hamilton, a 184-pound grappler, finished last season with a respectable 17-13
record, which was highlighted by a third place finish at the Plymouth State
Invitational. Hamilton, a 2004 All-New England selection, will serve his third
consecutive season as captain of the Southern Maine squad.
"Phil is a tremendous leader and a true student of the sport," noted Pistone.
"I have high expectations for him as an athlete and as a leader and so far this
season he has been doing a tremendous job in both aspects. He's the type of
athletes who wants to win in the worst way and he is determined to consistently
perform in all areas to get that job done."
Waite earned numerous honors a year ago, compiling a staggering 20-2 overall
record, including an undefeated 9-0 mark in dual meet action. Waite won the 197-
pound class at the Roger Williams Invitational and placed second at the Doug Park
Invitational in his first season with the Huskies, earning both All-New England
and Pilgrim League All-Star honors. Waite was also named the New England
Intercollegiate Wrestling Rookie Wrestler of the Month in November.
"Matt is a tremendous wrestler," commented Pistone. "He is moving up a weight
division from a year ago and he has his goals set very high with the reward being
to reach the NCAA tournament. He is a silent leader for us and he does his
talking through his results in the classroom and on the mat. He should have
another stellar year for us. His sixth place finish last year at the New England
Tournament really lit a fire in Matt to become the top wrestler in his division."
In its first two tournament of the year, Southern Maine has fared well
placing 10th at the Roger Williams University Invitational and 13th at the Doug
Parker Invitational.
Commenting about his teams abilities heading into the season Pistone
remarked, "We've got the top recruiting class in this program's history and each
and everyone of these athletes have shown that they have the will and desire to
win. They are very hard workers who wrestle for themselves and for the team, and
that starts with our captains."
Southern Maine returns to the mat in December at home in a match versus
Bryant and American International College (Dec. 4, 12 p.m.), before hosting New
Hampshire (Dec. 8, 7:30 p.m.). The Huskies close out their first semester
schedule at Roger Williams with Plymouth State and Western New England (Dec. 11,
11 a.m.).
Southern Maine opens 2005 with back-to-back dates on the road, first at the
College of New Jersey Invitational (Jan. 7, 10:30) and then at Steven Tech with
Messiah (Jan. 8, 12 p.m.) before hosting Worcester Polytech (Jan. 10, 7 p.m.) in
on of the Huskies two dual meet of the month. The Huskies will compete at the
Plymouth State Invitational (Jan. 16, 10 a.m.) and then host Plymouth State (Jan.
19, 7 p.m.) before ending the month's competition at the NECCWA Duals (Jan. 23, 11
a.m.), at MIT with Bridgewater State (Jan. 26, 6 p.m.) and hosting Wesleyan and
Johnson and Wales (Jan. 30, 12 p.m.).
The Huskies end their season with two events in February, both on the road,
including a tri-meet at Roger Williams with Rhode Island College (Feb. 5, 1 p.m.)
before entering the New England Tournament (Feb. 19-20).
