USM's Ben Goulette Named Pilgrim League Co-Rookie of the Week

	GORHAM, Maine  --  University of Southern Maine freshman wrestler Ben 
Goulette (Bath, Maine) has been selected as the Co-Rookie Wrestler of the Week by 
the Pilgrim League for the week of January 20-26.  Goulette shared the honor with 
Kyle Hunsicker of Bridgewater State College.  The awards were announced Monday 
afternoon.
	Goulette, wrestling in the 149-pound weight class, earned his citation after 
winning three out of four matches at the New England College Conference Wrestling 
Association's (NECCWA) Dual Meet Championship held at the United State Coast Guard 
Academy on Saturday (January 25).
	He is the second USM wrestler to be cited by the Pilgrim Wrestling League 
this season.  Sophomore Phil Hamilton (Skowhegan, Maine) was named the Pilgrim 
League Wrestler of the Week back in December.
	In USM's the opening round match against eventual tournament champion Trinity 
College, Goulette dropped a tough 9-7 decision to Eric Egolf.  Goulette came back 
in the consolation bracket against Plymouth State College's Micah Canestro to post 
a 13-1 victory.  Against Western New England College, Goulette shutout Mike 
Maynard 13-0.  He finished the day by pinning Brian Hayes of Springfield College 
at 1:16.
	With the three wins, Goulette improved his season overall record to 7-3.
	Southern Maine, 1-6 overall in dual matches, will host its final home matches 
of the season this Wednesday when Bridgewater State College and Massachusetts 
Institute of Technology come to Gorham for a tri-match.  The opening match gets 
underway at 6:00 p.m.

USM's Phil Hamilton Named Wrestler of the Week

	GORHAM, Maine  --  University of Southern Maine sophomore wrestler Phil 
Hamilton (Skowhegan, Maine) has been selected by the Pilgrim League as its 
Wrestler of the Week for the period ending December 15.  The announcement was made 
Tuesday by the league office.
	Hamilton, who has been a bright spot for the Huskies this season, went 2-0 
last Saturday (December 14) in matches against Roger Williams University and 
Plymouth State College.  For the season, Hamilton has 9-6 record, including a 
fifth-place finish in the season-opening Roger Williams Invitational Tournament.
	Wrestling up a weight class at 197 pounds, Hamilton took a 4-2 decision from 
Bob Blinn of Roger Williams in his first match.  Later in the afternoon, he took  
a 2-1 decision from Kyle Pietrowski of Plymouth State.  Despite Hamilton's 
efforts, the Huskies lost to Roger Williams 33-8 and to Plymouth State 30-18.
	Southern Maine, 0-2 in dual matches, is off until January 10 when it hosts 
Worcester Polytechnic Institute at the Warren G. Hill Gymnasium.

Phil Hamilton and Chris Rispoli Named USM Wrestling Captains

	GORHAM, Maine  --  Sophomores Phil Hamilton (Skowhegan, Maine) and Chris 
Rispoli (Londonderry, N.H.) of the University of Southern Maine Huksies wrestling 
team have been named captains for the 2002-03 season.  Head coach Ted Reese made 
the announcement last week prior to the Huskies season-opening event.
	Hamilton compiled a 7-20 mark in his rookie season competing at 174 and 184 
pounds.  Rispoli had a 6-12 record wrestling primarily at 125 and 133 pounds.
	"(Phil and Chris) are very hard workers.  They both bring enthusiasm and 
dedication to our program, and each has a tremendous attitude and work ethic," 
commented Reese, who begins his sixth season as the team's only coach.  "Chris is 
the more vocal of the two.  He's been (at practice) every day encouraging the 
wrestlers despite being out with an injury.  Phil was our most improved wrestler 
last year, and both have improved incredibly this season."
	The Huskies opened their season last weekend, competing in the Roger Williams 
Invitational Tournament, and placed 14th among the 17 schools participating.  
Hamilton, who placed fifth in the 184-pound bracket, was the Huskies top finisher.  
Rispoli did not compete.  
	Southern Maine will travel to Springfield (Mass.) College this Saturday 
(10:00 a.m.) to take part in the prestigious Doug Parker Invitational Tournament.
	The remainder of the 2002-03 schedule is as follows:  December 7, at the York 
(Penn.) College Spartan Invitational Tournament (10:00 a.m.); and December 14, 
Roger Williams and Plymouth State at USM (12:00 p.m.).
	Also January 10, Worcester Polytech at USM (7:00 p.m.); January 18, at the 
Plymouth State College Open (10:00 a.m.);  January 25, at the NECCWA Duals at the 
U.S. Coast Guard Academy (10:00 a.m.); and January 29, Massachusetts Institute of 
Technology and Bridgewater State College at USM (6:00 p.m.).
	The Huskies close out the season with four events in February:  February 1, 
at Wesleyan Quad meet (1:00);  February 7, at Rhode Island College tri-match (5:00 
p.m.); February 13, versus Williams College at Milford, N.H. (6:30 p.m.); and 
February 22-23, at the NECCWA Championship Tournament at Roger Williams 
University.

USM Huskies Open Season at Roger Williams University Invitational
Phil Hamilton Takes Fifth at 184

	GORHAM, Maine  --  The University of Southern Maine wrestling team opened its 
2002-03 season by finishing 14th among the 17 schools competing at the day-long 
2002 Roger Williams University Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Saturday 
(November 16).
	The Huskies scored 26 points in the event.  Sophomore Phil Hamilton 
(Skowhegan, Maine) was USM's top finisher, placing fifth at 184 pounds.  Hamilton 
dropped his opening round match to eventual champion Nate Kittredge of Plymouth 
State College, then reeled off four straight wins in the consolation bracket 
before losing to Josh Boyle of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.  Hamilton was a 
forfeit winner over Ben Perez of Norwich in the fifth-sixth place match.
	Sophomore Ian Slaymaker (Rockport, Maine) at 174 pounds and freshman Shaun 
Darrow (Pittsfield, Mass.) went 2-2 on the day.  Winners of single matches were 
sophomore Clayton Wall (Rodman, N.Y.) at 149 pounds, freshman Jeff Verrocchio 
(Tewksbury, Mass.) at 168 pounds, freshman Jeff Stiasny (Manchester, N.H.) at 197 
pounds and sophomore Seth Kingsley (Berwick, Maine) at 285 pounds.
	Ithaca College won the team title with 175 points to outdistance second place 
Norwich with 122.5 points.  Trinity College, Roger Williams, and the U.S. coast 
guard Academy round out the top five teams.
	The Huskies return to action this coming Saturday (November 23) when they 
travel to Springfield College to take part in the prestigious Doug Parker 
Invitational Tournament.
