USM's Morris Wins National Greco-Roman Title
GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine senior wrestler Tim Morris
(Pittsfield, Mass.) won the 50-kilogram (110 pounds) weight class Greco-Roman
title Friday morning at the 2002 University Nationals held at Northwestern
University in Evanston, Illinois.
Morris won a pair of technical falls to capture the title, and is eligible
to compete in the 2002 Senior World Team Trials in St. Paul, Minn., on June 21-
23. Representing the Downeast Stormers, Morris defeated Trevor Person of the
U.S. Air Force in his first match, 12-2, Thursday night, then came back Friday
morning to defeat Bowah Roberts of the U.S. Marine Corps, 11-0.
A four-year letterman at USM, Morris served as a co-captain this past
winter season, compiling a 10-9 overall record competing in the 125-pound weight
class

Ewer Takes Third at NECCWA Championships
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore C.J. Ewer (Charleston, Maine) of the
University of Southern Maine wrestling team finished third in the 149-pound
weight class at the New England College Conference Wrestling Association
(NECCWA) Championships held this past weekend at Springfield College.
Ewer won his opening match by pin fall before losing a narrow 9-7 decision
to Dan Whelan of Norwich in the second round. He then won four straight matches
through the consolation bracket of the double-elimination tournament to move
into the consolation bracket final. Ewer lost a tough 7-4 decision to Matt
Ferrisi of Wesleyan University in that match to finish in third place.
Other USM competitors at the event included senior Tim Morris (Pittsfield,
Mass) who was 1-2 in the 125-pound bracket, senior Pat Caruana (Auburn, N.Y.)
was 0-2 at 133 pounds, and freshman Rafael Gonzalez (Phippsburg, Maine) who went
0-2 in the 141-pound weight class.
Seniors Joe Cox (Dexter, Maine) and Jesse Coleman just missed placing in
the top six at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively. Each finished the tournament
with a 2-2 record.
Freshman Phil Hamilton (Skowhegan, Maine) was 1-2 at 174 pounds, and
freshman Kevin Ball (Eliot, Maine) was 0-2 at 184 pounds. USM did not enter a
competitor in the 197 or 285 pounds weight classes.

Caruana, Coleman and Morris Named Wrestling Captains
GORHAM, Maine -- Seniors Pat Caruana (Auburn, N.Y.), Jesse Coleman
(Bristol, Vt.) and Tim Morris (Pittsfield, Mass.) of the University of Southern
Maine wrestling team have been named captains for the 2001-02 season. Head
coach Ted Reese made the announcement.
Thus far this season, the Huskies have competed in the Roger Williams
University Invitational tournament and the Doug Park Invitational tournament at
Springfield College. USM was 12th among 15 teams at the RWU Invitational and
17th among 18 at the Parker Invitational. To date, Caruana has a 2-2 record.
Coleman and Morris have yet to compete.
"All three are good, hard-working, conscientious kids," commented Reese,
who begins his fifth season at the helm. "Tim brings an infectious enthusiasm
and lots of techniques to the room. Pat has been our most dedicated wrestler
the past two seasons. Jesse has not spent as much time in the room this fall
because of his class schedule, but he's very committed to the program."
Caruana compiled a 13-16 record last season and earned All-New England
honors at 133 pounds by finishing sixth at last year's New England
Championships. A two-time winner of the team's Most Dedicated Wrestler award,
he has a career record of 26-51.
Coleman also earned All-New England honors at 165 pounds with his fifth-
place finish at the New England Championships. He had a 7-8 overall record last
year, and has a two-year career slate of 18-16.
Morris, who has only one semester of eligibility remaining and will
utilize it next semester, was the recipient of the team's Most Improved Wrestler
award last winter after compiling a 15-16 record at 125 pounds. Morris shared
the captain's responsibilities last year with Adam Farrington. He has an 18-33
career record.
USM returns to action on December 1 when it travels to York, Penn., for
the York College Invitational. The Huskies conclude their first semester
schedule the following weekend with a quad meet at Roger Williams.
After the New Year, the remainder of the Huskies' schedule is as follows:
