Southern Maine Concludes Season at LEC Championship
PROVIDENCE -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies women’s tennis
team concluded its 2007 season Sunday competing at the Little East Conference
Women’s Tennis Championship hosted by Rhode Island College in Providence.
The Bridgewater State College Bears captured the team title to earn the
conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis
Championship next spring. The Bears captured four singles titles and one
doubles title to earn 20 points. Bridgewater State finished four points ahead
of second place Rhode Island College. Southern Maine finished the two-day
tournament earning one-half point.
Southern Maine’s doubles duo of freshman Nicole Willey (Windham, Maine) and
senior Sara Willey (Windham, Maine) were responsible for the Huskies half point
with a win in the first doubles flight consolation round. The Willey’s defeated
the UMass Dartmouth team of freshman Amy Lopes (Dartmouth, Mass.) and junior
Becky Bullock (Wrentham, Mass.) before concluding their run with an 8-3 loss to
Meghan Rodier (Francestown, N.H.) and Briley Boisvert (Goffstown, N.H.) of
Plymouth State in the consolation final.
In Sunday’s play, USM did not earn a point as its four singles players lost
in their consolation matches. Competing in the second flight, Sara Willey just
missed earning points for USM, dropping a narrow, 9-8 (5) decision to Western
Connecticut State University sophomore Brittany Hoynak (Old Lyme, Conn.).
Hoynak went on to win the consolation final.

Southern Maine Competes at 2007 LEC Championship
PROVIDENCE -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies women’s tennis
team earned a half point in the first day of competition at the 2007 Little East
Conference Women’s Tennis Championships Saturday hosted by Rhode Island College
in Providence.
Southern Maine’s first doubles duo of freshman Nicole Willey (Windham,
Maine) and senior Sara Willey (Windham, Maine) garnered the Huskies half point
with a win in the consolation round. After dropping a hard-fought, 8-6 decision
to Aurora Lormeau and Emily Johnson of the University of Massachusetts Boston,
the Willey’s earned a win over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth tandem
of freshman Amy Lopes (Dartmouth, Mass.) and junior Becky Bullock (Wrentham,
Mass./King Phillip Regional). The Willeys then lost an 8-3 decision to Meghan
Rodier and Briley Boisvert of Plymouth State University in the consolation
final.
USM’s second doubles pair of junior Heather Hallman (Durham, Maine/Bruns-
wick) and senior Ashley Kirkpatrick (Sanford, Maine) drop a first round match to
Alexi Fiorita and Amber Ubertini of the UMass Dartmouth, 8-2, and a consolation
round match to Kristen Chan and Katie McPherson of the University of Massachu-
setts Boston, 8-2.
All five USM competitors lost in first round singles play on Saturday.
They will compete in the consolation bracket on Sunday.

2007 Little East Conference Women's Tennis Championship Postponed
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The 2007 Little East Conference Women's Tennis
Championship, originally scheduled to begin today, has been delayed due to
inclement weather.
The tournament has been rescheduled to begin Saturday morning at 10:00
a.m., and will continue through Sunday. The championship is being hosted by
Rhode Island College at the Anchorwomen's Tennis Court Complex.
The winning team will receive the Little East Conference's automatic bid to
the NCAA Division III National Championship tournament.

Bridgewater State Dumps Southern Maine 9-0
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State College Bears earned
victories in five singles matches and two doubles matches en route to a 9-0 win
over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference
women's tennis match Sunday afternoon in Bridgewater, Mass.
With the win, the Bears improve to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in Little East
Conference play. Southern Maine remains winless on the season at 0-11 and 0-7
in the LEC.
Senior Angie Bizzozero (Norwell, Mass.) and freshman Jessica Francis (West
Barnstable, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-2 victory at first doubles defeating the
USM duo of Nicole and Sara Willey (Windham, Maine). Francis also pulled out a
tough victory at third singles besting Southern Maine junior Heather Hallman
(Durham, Maine) 4-6, 6-0 (10-6).
Southern Maine returns to action on Friday and Saturday when it competes in
the Little East Conference Championships tournament hosted by Rhode Island
College. Bridgewater State faces Western Connecticut State on Monday (3:30
p.m.) for an LEC match.

UMass Boston Defeats Southern Maine 7-2
BOSTON -- Senior Aurora Lormeaus (Milton, Mass.) and sophomore Emily
Johnson (Saugus, Mass.) led the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons to a
7-2 Little East Conference women's tennis win over the University of Southern
Maine Huskies Saturday afternoon in a match played at the Boston College High
School courts in Boston.
With the win, UMass Boston improves to 2-6 overall and earns its first LEC
win to move to 1-5. Southern Maine remains winless on the season, falling to
0-10 overall and 0-6 in the conference.
Lormeaus defeated USM freshman Nicole Willey (Windham, Maine) 6-0, 6-1 in
first singles while Johnson earned a hard-fought, 6-4, 6-4 win over senior Sara
Willey (Windham, Maine) at second singles. Lormeaus and Johnson teamed up to
defeat the Willeys at first doubles 8-5.
Southern Maine senior Ashley Kirkpatrick (Sanford, Maine) earned the
Huskies lone point in singles action by defeating freshman Brittany Engel
(Freehold, N.J.) 6-3, 6-2. Kirkpatrick also teamed with junior Heather Hallman
(Durham, Maine) to earn an 8-3 win at second doubles.

Colby Sweeps Southern Maine 9-0
WATERVILLE, Maine -- Sophomores Julie Achenbaum (New Canaan, Conn.) and
Audrey Jacobsen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) earned victories at first and
second singles respectively to lead the Colby College Mules to a decisive 9-0
win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's
tennis match Wednesday afternoon in Waterville, Maine.
The Mules were playing their first dual match of the season and stand at
1-0. Southern Maine remains winless on the season at 0-9.
Achenbaum defeated USM freshman Nicole Willey (Windham, Maine/Windham) 6-1,
6-1 at first singles, and Jacobsen downed senior Sara Willey (Windham,
Maine/Windham) 6-0, 6-0 at second singles. Achenbaum and Jacobsen also teamed
up for a victory at first doubles beating the Willeys 8-2.

Western Connecticut Downs Southern Maine 7-2

Plymouth State Cuts Down Southern Maine 7-2
GORHAM, Maine -- The Plymouth State University Panthers women’s tennis
team won five of six singles points and earned two out of three doubles points
to take a 7-2 Little East Conference win over the University of Southern Maine
Huskies Tuesday afternoon in Gorham, Maine.
Earning its second straight victory, Plymouth State improves to 3-6 overall
and inches above .500 in conference action at 3-2. Southern Maine falls to 0-7
overall and 0-4 in the Little East.
Plymouth State senior captain Jill Deyermond (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane)
led the way for the Panthers with a 6-0, 6-0 win over USM freshman Nicole Willey
(Windham, Maine/Windham) at first singles. Deyermond combined with freshman
Buffy Garland (Freedom, N.H./Kennett) to post a win in no. 2 doubles.
Southern Maine senior captain Ashley Kirkpatrick (Sanford, Maine/Sanford)

UMass Dartmouth Downs Southern Maine 9-0

gutted out a hard-earned, 7-6, 6-3 win at fourth singles to help the University
of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs to a 9-0 sweep of the University of Southern
Maine Huskies in Little East Conference women's tennis action Saturday afternoon
in Gorham.
With the win, the Corsairs improve to 6-2 overall and remain undefeated in
conference action at 4-0. Southern Maine falls to 0-6 and 0-3 in the LEC.
Pham defeated Southern Maine senior co-captain Ashley Kirkpatrick (Sanford,
Maine/Sanford) as the Corsairs earned all six of the available singles points in
the win.

Colby-Sawyer Defeats Southern Maine 6-0
NEW LONDON, N.H. -- The Colby-Sawyer College Chargers earned decisive
victories in singles action to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies
6-0 in a weather-shortened, non-conference women’s tennis match Thursday
afternoon in New London, N.H.
With the win, Colby-Sawyer snapped a two-match losing streak to rebound to
7-2 overall. The loss is the fifth straight for Southern Maine which remains
winless in 2007.
Sophomore Mary Francis (Steuben, Maine) started the Chargers toward their
victory by defeating Southern Maine freshman Nicole Willey (Windham, Maine) 6-1,
6-0 at first singles. The Chargers earned the next four points before the match
was called due to weather.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it hosts the
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in Little East Conference action. Colby-
Sawyer faces Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).

6-3 win at no. 4 singles to lead the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen to a 9-0
victory of the University of Southern Maine Huskies in Little East Conference
women's tennis action Saturday in Providence.
Bannon defeated USM senior Ashley Kirkpatrick (Sanford, Maine/Sanford) 6-2,
6-3, to remain undefeated in her collegiate career with a 22-0 singles mark and
help the Anchorwomen improve to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the LEC. Rhode Island
College has won 32 consecutive LEC regular season matches dating back to the

Salem State Downs Southern Maine 8-1
GORHAM, Maine -- The Salem State College Vikings swept three doubles
matches and took five of the six singles points to earn an 8-1 Little East
Conference victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in women's
tennis action Tuesday afternoon in Gorham.
With the win, Salem State improves to 1-2 overall and evens its LEC mark at
1-1. The loss is the third straight for Southern Maine which drops to 0-3
overall and 0-1 in conference action.
Sophomore Megan Cote (Fall River, Mass.) and senior Becky Pyndynkowski
(Danvers, Mass.) led the way for the Vikings earning an 8-3 win at first
doubles. Cote also took a 6-1, 6-3 victory at no. 1 singles by defeating USM
sophomore Kelly Maloney (Windham, Maine/Windham).
Southern Maine scored its lone point at no. 6 singles. Junior Sarah Reece
(Bath, Maine/Morse) battled her way to a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Salem State

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Athletics Department
announced Monday that the women's tennis match between USM and Bridgewater State
College, postponed this past Saturday due to weather, has been rescheduled for
October 14 at Bridgewater State beginning at 12:00 p.m.

Southern Maine Against Bridgewater State Match Postponed
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Athletics Department
announced today that Little East Conference women's tennis match between USM and
Bridgewater State College, scheduled for this afternoon in Bridgewater, Mass.,
has been postponed. No make up date has been announced.
Southern Maine returns on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) for its first home match of
the season when it hosts Salem State College. for an LEC match. Bridgewater
State travels to Plymouth State University on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) for a
conference match.

Bates Blanks Southern Maine 9-0
LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College Bobcats women's tennis team opened
its 2007 season sweeping all six singles and three doubles points to defeat the
University of Southern Maine Huskies 9-0 Thursday afternoon at the Wallach
Tennis Center in Lewiston, Maine.
Bates starts its season at 1-0 with the win, while the Huskies suffer their
second consecutive loss to drop to 0-2.
Senior Cecilia Grissa (Doylestown, Pa./George School) and sophomore
Alexandra Piacquad (Yardley, Pa./The Peddie School) led the way for the Bobcats,
earning 6-0, 6-0 in singles action after combining for an 8-1 win at first
doubles.
Grissa defeated USM sophomore Kelly Maloney (Windham, Maine/Windham) at no.
1 singles, while Piacquad downed Husky freshman Nicole Willey (Windham,
Maine/Windham) at no. 2 singles.
Southern Maine returns to action in its Little East Conference opener on
the road Saturday (1:00 p.m.) at Bridgewater State College. Bates will travel
to Cambridge, Mass., for its next competition on September 21 when it takes part
in the ITA Championships hosted by MIT.

Endicott Downs Southern Maine 9-0 in Season Opener
BEVERLY, Mass. -- The Endicott College Gulls swept the University of
Southern Maine Huskies to post a 9-0 non-conference women's tennis victory
Thursday afternoon in Beverly, Mass.
The Gulls earned points in all six singles matches after sweeping all three
doubles matches to begin its 2007 season at 1-0. Playing in its season-opener,
Southern Maine is 0-1 with the loss.
Sophomores Nicole Breting (Woonsocket, R.I.) and Lori Wardner (Wrentham,
Mass.) led Endicott, earning an 8-1 win over USM sister tandem Nicole and Sarah
Willey (Windham, Maine/Windham) at first doubles. Breting and Wardner also
picked up victories at first and second singles, respectively. Breting defeated
freshman Nicole Willey, 6-1, 6-0, while Wardner downed senior Sarah Willey 6-0,
6-3.
Southern Maine returns to action next Thursday (4:00 p.m.) when it travels
to Lewiston, Maine, for a match with Bates College. Endicott hosts Plymouth
State University this Saturday (12:00 p.m.) for its next contest.

Hans Römer Named USM Women's Tennis Coach
GORHAM, Maine -- Hans Römer, the Director of Tennis at the Portland
Country Club in Falmouth, Maine, has been named the head coach of the University
of Southern Maine Huskies women's tennis team in an announcement from Al Bean,
Director of Athletics.
Römer, who served as the interim head coach of the Colby College men's and
women's tennis programs in 2007, replaces Lori Towle who stepped down from the
position to pursue other professional opportunities.
"Hans has tremendous experience on and off of the court," commented Bean.
"He has been actively involved in the United States Professional Tennis
Association (USPTA) and possesses a wealth of knowledge and passion for the
sport. We are fortunate to have someone with Hans' credentials lead our women's
tennis program."
The former USPTA Vice President for the New England Division, Römer was
previously the Director of Tennis at the Bridgton (Maine) Highlands Country Club
from 2005-2007 and the Pierpont Racquet Club (Ventura, Calif.) from 2001-2005
prior to his position at the Portland Country Club.
A member of several organizations, including the United States Tennis
Association (USTA) and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), Römer has
authored several tennis related articles for various publications including
ADDvantage, a national publication for the USPTA and Center Court, an annual
publication for the Maine Tennis Association.
Römer was named the USPTA New England Regional Pro of the Year in 2006 and
was awarded USPTA national top 10 Career/Educational points in 2004 and 2006.
He earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from the CIOS Sports College
in the Netherlands in 1982.
