15th Annual Women's Grass Court Double Tournament
at International Tennis Hall of Fame, Newport, R.I.
Huskies Finish Second at Grass Court Doubles Tourney
NEWPORT, R.I. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies women's tennis
team made an impressive showing Saturday finishing in second place at the 15th
Annual Women's Grass Court Doubles Tournament hosted by Salve Regina University
at the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
The tournament team championship went right down to the final match where
the Salve Regina Alumni team duo of Christen Barrasso (Hanover, Mass.) and
Danielle Shannon (Chatham, N.J.) defeated the Huskies' pair of senior Suzanne
deGolian (Biddeford, Maine) and junior Erin O'Brien (Gorham, Maine), 7-6 (7-5),
7-5 , for the Flight A championship.
That victory gave the Salve Regina alumni to team title by three points
over USM. Colby-Sawyer College finished third.
It was an all-Huskies final in the Flight C championship as transfer
Meghan Rutherford (Falmouth, Maine) and senior Emily McArdle (Gorham, Maine)
combined to defeat freshmen Julie Castner (Westford, Mass.) and Lily Lam
(Rockland, Maine), 6-2, 6-3.

deGolian and McArdle Named USM Women's Tennis Captains
Huskies Open 1999 Season Against Wentworth on September 9
GORHAM, Maine -- Seniors Suzanne deGolian (West Buxton, Maine/Gorham
H.S.) and Emily McArdle (Gorham, Maine/Gorham H.S.) of the University of
Southern Maine Huskies women's tennis team have been named captains for the
upcoming 1999 season. Fifth-year head coach Wayne St. Peter made the
announcement recently.
The Huskies open their 15-date fall season on Thursday, September 9 when
they host Wentworth Institute of Technology (Boston, Mass.) at the Gorham High
School courts. USM will play five of its seven home matches this fall at the
GHS courts. The other two matches will be contested in the USM field house on
the Gorham campus.
deGolian, a two-time Little East Conference number one singles champion,
compiled a 5-8 singles record last fall, and combined with three doubles
partners to go 4-12. She won the Little East Conference number one singles
titles in 1996 and 1997 before losing in the semifinals last fall. During her
career, deGolian has compiled a 19-15 singles record, all at number one, and a
15-27 mark in doubles competition.
McArdle has compiled a 5-18 record in singles play and a 9-17 mark in
doubles over the last two fall seasons since transferring to USM. She has
played predominately at number five in singles and second or third doubles.
"Suzanne is a two-time number one singles LEC champion who sets the tone
for the team with her determination to win a third championship.
"Emily has worked hard on her organizational skills, and is leading by
example with her hard work and efforts to grow her game," St. Peter commented
regarding his two senior captains.

at UMass Boston (3:00); Sept. 25, at Salve Regina (Newport, R.I.) Grass Courts
Doubles Tournament (12:00); Sept. 28, UMass Lowell (at USM field house, 4:00);
and Sept. 30, at Colby-Sawyer (3:00).
Also Oct. 2, Rhode Island College (at USM field house, 1:00); Oct. 4, at
Endicott (3:30); Oct. 6, at Plymouth State (3:00); Oct. 12, Colby (@ Gorham
HS, 3:30); Oct. 16-17, at Little East Conference Championships Tournament (@
Plymouth State College); and Oct. 22-24, at New England Championships (@
Amherst, Mass.).
The Huskies will play an exhibition match on Oct. 9 against the University
of Maine at Gorham HS.
