GORHAM, Maine - Ben Putnam, a former number one singles player for the
University of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis team, has been named the head
coach of the women's tennis program. Al Bean, Director of Athletics at USM,
made the announcement of the appointment.
Putnam replaces long-time head coach Wayne St. Peter who resigned from the
position after ten years of service.
Putnam currently serves as the Assistant Boys' Coach at Cape Elizabeth High
School - a position he has held since 2001. During his tenure as the assistant
at Cape Elizabeth, Putnam has been a part of three undefeated state championship
squads for the Capers (2002, 2003, 2004). He has aided in the coaching of two
state singles runner-ups and coached three Western Maine Conference doubles
champions (2003, 2004, 2005). Along with his duties at Cape Elizabeth High
School, Putnam is also employed by St. Peter's Grand Slam Tennis Camps since
2001 and has served as the Head Pro since 2003.
As a prep player at Cheverus High School, Putnam was a four-year singles
player. He finished as a state singles quarterfinalist in 1997 and reached the
round of 16 in 1998. Putnam was also the team's captain as a junior and a
senior (1997, 1998).
Putnam will lead the Huskies into their first competition of the fall on
September 8 at Endicott College. The Huskies remain on the road to take on
Little East Conference opponent Bridgewater State (Sept. 10) before opening the
home portion of their schedule against LEC foe Salem State (Sept. 13). USM will
then travel to Rhode Island College for its third straight conference match
(Sept. 17) before opening a three-match homestand against Bowdoin (Sept. 21),
UMass Dartmouth (Sept. 24) and Plymouth State (Sept. 27). The Huskies close out
the month of September on the road against Colby-Sawyer (Sept. 29).
In October, the Huskies open at LEC opponent Western Connecticut (Oct. 1)
before playing back-to-back dates against Johnson & Wales (Oct. 7) and UMass
Boston (Oct. 8).
