Johnson and Wales Defeats Southern Maine 6-3
GORHAM, Maine -- The Johnson and Wales University Wildcats had too much
depth and dispatched the University of Southern Maine Huskies by a 6-3 margin
Friday afternoon in a non-conference women's tennis match played at the Gorham HS
courts.
The Wildcats, 9-2 on the season, were led by seniors Tara Pasquale (Cornwall-
on-Hudson, N.Y.) and Jen Costa (Healdsburg, Calif.) who each won three-set singles
matches and combined to win at number one doubles.
Seniors Emily Gedney (Middletown, R.I.) and Jessica Rogers (Sparta, N.J.)
combined to win at number two doubles and each had straight sets singles
victories.
Earning points for Southern Maine were junior Catie McCarthy (Newport,
Vt./North Country Union HS) at number three singles, junior Emily Straubel
(Littleton, Maine/Houlton HS) at number six singles, and the number three doubles
tandem of sophomores Casea Parady (Portland, Maine) and Sydney Orne (Auburn,
Maine/Edward Little HS).
Southern Maine, now 2-9, is off until next Friday and Saturday (October 15-
16) when it serves as the host school for the Little East Conference Championships
to be played at the Deering Oaks courts in Portland.

USM's Katie Welch Named LEC Player of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior co-captain Katie Welch (Calais, Maine/Calais HS) of
the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's tennis team has been selected as
the Little East Conference Player of the Week for the week of September 27 through
October 3. The announcement was made Monday afternoon by the conference office.
Despite the team compiling a 1-2 record last week, Welch posted a 3-0 mark at
#1 singles and a 2-1 record with junior Catie McCarthy (Newport, Vt.) at #1
doubles. For the season, Welch improved to 7-3 in singles play and 6-4 in doubles
(6-2 with McCarthy).
Welch opened the week on Tuesday by taking a straight sets victory over
Whitney O'Leary of Plymouth State University, 6-3, 6-4, and combined with McCarthy
to defeat O'Leary and Erica Huckins in doubles, 8-5, giving USM two points in an
eventual 6-3 loss to the Panthers. Welch followed up with a pair of wins in the
Huskies' 8-1 win over Western Connecticut State University on Saturday, beating
Kendra Sloat in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, and teamed with McCarthy to defeat Sloat
and Sarah Holmes in doubles, 8-3.
In a non-conference match on Thursday (September 30) against Colby-Sawyer,
Welch won her scheduled singles match by default. She and McCarthy were defeated
by Alex Hardenbrook and Leah Goldman in a very close doubles match, 8-6.
The Huskies, 2-8 overall and 2-4 in Little East play, wrap up their regular
season schedule this Friday when they host Johnson and Wales University in a non-
conference match. Southern Maine will host the annual Little East Conference
women's tennis championships tournament October 15-16 at the Deering Oaks courts
in Portland.

Huskies Roll Past Colonials 8-1
GORHAM, Maine -- Paced by junior co-captains Katie Welch (Calais, Maine/Calais
HS) and Catie McCarthy (Newport, Vt./North Country Union), the University of
Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Western Connecticut State University
Colonials, 8-1, in a Little East Conference women's tennis match Saturday
afternoon at the Gorham HS courts.
Welch and McCarthy each took straight sets victories at #1 and #3 singles,
respectively, after combining to win at #1 doubles.
Also posting a pair of wins for the Huskies were sophomores Chelsea and Casea
Parady (Portland, Maine/Portland HS) and junior Emily Straubel (Littleton,
Maine/Houlton HS). The Parady sisters each needed three set to post single
victories at #4 and #5, while Straubel dispatched her #6 singles opponent in
straight sets. Chelsea Parady teamed with Straubel to win at #2 doubles. Casea
Parady paired with sophomore Sydney Orne (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little HS) to win
the #3 doubles match.
Freshman Sarah Holmes (Bristol, Conn.) picked up the only point for Western
Connecticut with a straight sets win at #2 singles.
Southern Maine snapped a seven-match losing streak to improve to 2-8 overall
and 2-4 in the conference. The Huskies will host Johnson and Wales University
next Friday (October 8). Western Connecticut dropped to 2-4 overall and 0-4 in
the conference. The Colonials travel to Manhattanville College on Tuesday.

Colby-Sawyer Downs Southern Maine 7-2
GORHAM, Maine -- Four players won a pair of matches to lead the
Colby-Sawyer College Chargers past the University of Southern Maine Huskies 7-2 in
a non-conference women's college tennis match Thursday afternoon at the Gorham
High School tennis courts.
Sophomore Leah Goldman (Milton, Mass.) won her eight-game pro set match at #2
singles, and combined with sophomore Alex Hardenbrook (Kennebunk, Maine) to win at
#1 doubles.
Junior Tarren Bailey (Guilford, Conn.) won in straights set at #3 singles,
and sophomore Paige Pulley (Bethesda, Md.) did the same at #5 singles. The two
combined to win at #2 doubles.
Freshman Courtney Hammond (Brunswick, Maine) won in straight sets at #4
singles and combined with freshman Alex Whaley (Narragansett, R.I.) to win the #3
doubles match.
Posting wins for USM were junior Katie Welch (Calais, Maine), who won the #1
singles match by default, and junior Emily Straubel (Littleton, Maine), who won
the #6 singles battle by taking the super tiebreaker after splitting sets.
Southern Maine (1-8) will host Western Connecticut State University on
Saturday in a Little East Conference match. Colby-Sawyer (7-2) host Eastern
Nazarene College on Saturday for a Commonwealth Coast Conference match.

PSU Women's Tennis Too Much for Southern Maine
Panthers Improve to 3-1 in Conference Play
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Freshman Jill Deyermond (Atkinson, N.H.) and junior Rachel
Xavier (Meredith, N.H.) won two matches each Tuesday afternoon to lead the
Plymouth State University women's tennis team to a 6-3 victory over the University
of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference match at the P.E. Center Courts.
Deyermond won her match at #3 singles in straight sets, while Xavier did the
same at #4 singles, improving her season record to 6-0. The two also teamed up
for an 8-2 pro-set victory at #2 doubles.
Other singles winners for PSU included sophomore Erica Huckins (Plymouth,
N.H.) at #2, and junior Sarah Cole (North Waterboro, Maine) at #5, as she improved
her season record to 5-1. The tandem of sophomore Ashley Gorman (Cumberland,
R.I.) and junior Liz Duell (Hope Valley, R.I.) also captured a win for the
Panthers at #3 doubles.
Junior Katie Welch (Calais, Maine) registered a pair of wins for the Huskies,
posting a victory at #1 singles and with classmate Catie McCarthy (Newport, Vt.)
at #1 doubles. Junior Emily Straubel (Littleton, Maine) also picked up a win for
USM at #6 singles.
PSU, 3-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play, plays three more home matches
this week - Endicott on Thursday (4:00 p.m.), Rhode Island College on Friday (3:30
p.m.) and Castleton State on Sunday (1:00 p.m.). USM, 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the
LEC, returns to Maine for home matches Thursday against Colby-Sawyer (3:00 p.m.)
